Ex-NFL star says Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest threat is NFC team, and it’s not the 49ers

Kansas City has won three Super Bowl rings in five years and is now talking about the realistic dream of a three-peat – which has never been done before.

The fact no team has ever done this makes it one of the greatest sporting achievements waiting to be accomplished.

Are the Chiefs that team?

They got all the components

They certainly have the capability, Patrick Mahomes is in the prime of his career and has won rings without an elite wide-receiving core.

Rashee Rice is developing into one of the most one-to-watch sophomore season players and could be given the role of receiver number one.

Travis Kelce is coming off a subpar season for him – which is most tight ends excellent seasons – so the nine-time Pro Bowler will be determined to bounce back.

Steve Spagnuolo has masterminded an elite defense that has dominated the rankings for the last few seasons.

The Chiefs are hopeful that defensive lineman Chris Jones will be resigning, a huge step to achieving the dream.

Mix all these components and it is hard to disregard the idea of three consecutive rings.

However, teams are waiting in the wings to usurp the Chiefs’ throne.

Who can dethrone the Chiefs

NFL on ESPN discussed who is the likely candidate to stop the Chiefs’ three-peat fairytale.

Reporter Mina Kimes responded when asked if the San Francisco 49ers were the biggest threat: “Yh they are, I appreciate Deebo’s realism that it is really hard to get back to where they were.

“I do think they are situated better than any other team in the NFL.”

Kimberley Martin suggested another team to knock the Chiefs off their perch: “The other team I would say is the Cincinnati Bengals, I look to them because of their quarterback.

“A guy (Joe Burrow) who is 3-1 against Patrick Mahomes… the defense is only going to get better. Joe Burrow is the second-best quarterback in the NFL.”

The Detroit Lions are contenders

Former NFL wide receiver Harry Douglas had this take on the question: “I’m gonna go to a team that was 17 points up against the San Francisco 49ers and that’s the Detroit Lions.

“When you look at Jared Goff, he understands what it is like to beat a guy like Patrick Mahomes, granted that did it on the first game of the year on Thursday night this season.

“I’m gonna go back to his days with the Los Angeles Rams where they had that shootout vs Patrick Mahomes.

“I like their culture… what Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell are building… and they got a lot of cap space to work with and add to what they have.”

All those teams are very plausible suggestions.

Can the 49ers recover from the heartbreak last year?

Can Joe Burrow manage to stay healthy for the entirety of a season?

Or could the Lions go one step further and build on their admirable culture?

Firstly, they will have to get through Mahomes and company who talked about the three-peat in the locker room after Super Bowl LVIII success.
