The Kansas City Chiefs are tied up in a pivotal offseason which sees the need for Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed to be given new contracts.

Although it is not all that simple for the Kansas City Chiefs, According to Sportac, on the Chiefs 51-man roster, they only have $9.6 million wiggle room.

The franchise most recently released 29-year-old wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling which will save an estimated cap space of $12 million.

Cap space pressure for Chiefs

Important money if they are to save a space for three-time Super Bowl winner Jones.

NFL reports in the last few days stated the Kansas City Chiefs are willing to use the franchise tag on Sneed.

Andy Reid declared at the NFL Combine he is extremely keen for both Sneed and Jones to stay.

Lockdown corners are like gold dust in the league, placing the franchise tag on Sneed, if the team cannot reach a long-term deal, will mean the Chiefs can use the star as trade value.

Arguably, Chris Jones is the most important piece of the Chiefs defense.

The defensive tackle has made five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances from 2019 until 2023.

Prior to the beginning of the 2023 season, Jones refused to turn up to training as he searched for a new long-term contract with the Arrowhead pride.

On September 11th 2023, the Chiefs and Jones came to an agreement on a 1-year-deal.

Contract talks last year did not go very smoothly and there were certainly times when the parties butted heads and did not see eye to eye.

Now, fresh talks are taking place with optimism from both sides to keep the two-time First-Team All-Pro in Kansas.

Learning from mistakes

James Palmer, correspondent for NFL Network, spoke with Chiefs GM, Brett Veach, about how last years’ talks could affect proceedings this time around: “He does think of it as a positive the way they went through negotiations a year ago.

“I asked him is it going to hinder the negotiations that you didn’t work something out or is it helping you?

“He said, we actually have some familiarity about the ground work we want to work from at the end of the negotiations when it didn’t come to fruition.

“I found it interesting he said, that things didn’t end up but it could help this time around.”

Last year’s talks could prove to be beneficial and could make for a smoother negotiation this time.

One thing is for certain, all fans, players and coaches want to see Jones lined up in the red jersey once again.
