Sixth-year wide receiver, Marquez Valdes-Scantling is being released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Reports have emerged to state the Chiefs will be parting-ways with their two-season wideout man.

Valdes-Scantling to be released

Jeremy Fowler, ESPN’s senior NFL reporter, confirmed the breaking news via X: “Chiefs are releasing Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

“Saves Kansas City $12 million on the cap.”

Although, Fowler did point out moments later the Chiefs did appreciate his talent but had bigger fish to fry in the off season: “Valdes-Scantling a vertical threat who still draws attention down field, which K.C. valued.

Handling Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed the top priority for the team.”

The man known as ‘MVS’ is saving the Chiefs $12 million. Saving cap space will be paramount as the Chiefs try to fit the bill to keep Jones and Sneed.

Head coach Andy Reid stated the two defensive stars were a priority and is keen to workout a solution to keep both.

MVS is supposed to be the Kansas City Chiefs deep ball threat, possessing an impressive aerial threat mixed with lighting speed.

Although, the 2018 draft pick for Green Bay has endured at underwhelming regular season campaign.

He was struggling to consistently produce catches and become a contributor to the offense.

However, MVS came to life in the AFC Divisional round against the Buffalo Bills in 2023.

Producing two 30+ yard catches on two separate drives in the second half, both on touchdown drives.

The wideout also caught the touchdown in Super Bowl LVIII to give Chiefs Kingdom a crucial 13-10 lead – although he was criticised for a bizarre play where he appeared to run backwards with the ball.

Overall, postseason MVS has produced consistent numbers for the Chiefs. Boasting exactly 250 yards receiving in the playoffs, helping the Chiefs to two Super Bowl wins.

Despite this, inadequate showings in the regular season and a large cap hit, have led the franchise to releasing the 29-year-old.

Chiefs fans react

Kasnsas City Chiefs fans have taken to X and expressed their reactions to the news.

@grego_oreo said: “Ouch after winning the Super Bowl, cold world.”

@knowerofallball speculated the reason for his release: “Chiefs definitely picking up a WR in free agency.”

@HeshComps saw the logic behind the move as he considered Patrick Mahomes’ contract: “No brainer honestly. They can save like 7m restructuring Mahomes too.”

@aklee51 brought Taylor Swift into the frame with his reaction: “Life comes at you fast when Taylor Swift isn’t your girlfriend.”

Some fans could only tip their hate at the fact he even won a ring with the Chiefs (two in fact).

@westsidephilos1 mentioned: “At least he won a SB.”

Most fan reactions were understanding when considering the poor regular season and cap hit value.

Nevertheless, some did feel bad after his Super Bowl heroics.

As a wide receiver is now dropped and Andy Reid adoring Rashee Rice’s growth, all arrows are indicating he could become wide receiver number one.
