Tom Pelissero suggests star Jerry Jones cut has forced the Cowboys to delay 2024 contract proposals

The Dallas Cowboys are content with letting their key player contracts remain unresolved this offseason and one player may have forced the front office to adopt this approach.

Three key cornerstone players require new contracts with the Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons.

Prescott is set to be eyeing up a monstrous record-breaking $60 million per year extension but has had no progress thus far.

Therefore, if he plays on a contract year in the 2024 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent and can entertain offers in the open market.

CeeDee Lamb is set to continue his holdout from training after nothing has been agreed on

America’s Team has not handed their wide receiver Lamb a veteran deal despite entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Moreover, the 2023 First-Team All-Pro has decided to hold out from all the Cowboys’ voluntary workout programs.

In addition, the player resides in a receiving class where other superstars like Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase search for new deals.

Unlike Prescott, the Cowboys can use the franchise tag on Lamb in 2025. However, Lamb is desperate to be paid now which is telling from his actions thus far.

NFL analysts have questioned the Cowboys’ contract approach and Tom Pelissero suggests a reason why

Many analysts and NFL media personalities have questioned why the Cowboys persist on ‘kicking the can down the road’.

Inevitably, the longer they sit on the deal, the price will continue to rise, only making the final figure more expensive which benefits the player.

Tom Pelissero spoke on The Rich Eisen Show about the situation in Dallas and suggested a reason why they have adopted this mentality.

“Jerry Jones and the Cowboys, for whatever reason, have had the philosophy… of always kick the can down the road,” he said on the show.

“What that means is, yeah you buy yourself more time if a guy falls off. If you have a Jaylon Smith situation where you pay him and he doesn’t play well and you gotta cut him, you avoid that.”

Jaylon Smith’s huge payday continues to haunt Jerry Jones in 2024

The NFL expert suggests that Jaylon Smith’s situation with the Cowboys in 2021 could still be profound in Jerry Jones’ mind.

The middle linebacker was offered a five-year $64 million extension in 2019 and was cut only two years later.

Smith’s production fell off after the massive deal, coinciding with a wrist injury in 2021 and the emergence of future three-time All-Pro Micah Parsons.

Ezekiel Elliott’s massive contract has made Jerry Jones second-guess key decisions

Skip Bayless has also suggested agreeing to a record-breaking deal with Ezekiel Elliott also plays on Jones’ mind.

Furthermore, the 81-year-old owner has said he still has much to learn about that deal. Similar to Smith, Elliott’s production dropped off after signing a marquee deal at running back.

The Cowboys’ key player contracts look set to play on into the future with no sign the respective parties are close to agreeing on terms.
