‘The day after’… Cowboys expert explains the moment Jerry Jones should have offered Prescott a new deal

The Dallas Cowboys offseason conversation started with Dak Prescott being given an extension and four months later, it remains a subject of debate.

Jerry Jones and his son Stephen have projected a vote of ‘confidence’ in their signal-caller but there has been no action to their plan.

Cap space was the key factor for the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason, they refused to show Prescott the money out of fear they would be overpaying by a considerable margin.

However, no extension means the 30-year-old will sit on the second largest cap-hit in the NFL at $55 million.

Jerry gave Dak Prescott all the leverage in 2024 with their previous deal

America’s Team knew this time would be so in 2021 when they agreed the four-year extension with Prescott.

The deal included $126 million in guaranteed money with a no-trade or no-tag clause.

Prescott had already maintained the leverage in this negotiation three years before the present time.

Therefore, the Dallas Cowboys could have tried to extend Dak Prescot much earlier than this.

Dave Helman explains the moment the Cowboys should have signed Prescott

Cowboys expert Dave Helman believes he knows the smart time that the front office should have gone into hyperdrive to show Prescott a new deal.

“Cowboys have known this needs to be done (Prescott’s extension) for at least 15 months,” Helman said via Speak.

“I remember the day after they lost that Niners game, you know 19-12, Dak throws two picks, Zek (Elliott) has that play where he plays center for some reason. The day after that I was like it would be probably smart to sign Dak if you want him to be your quarterback.”

Helman has confirmed that this should have been the point, if they wanted Prescott as the future QB, they should have penned him to a new deal.

If they did not want him and opted to rebuild, that is a different story and acceptable.

Yet, the message of intent from the front office is that the 2023 MVP runner-up will receive an extension.

Experts persist in the reoccurring theme of Jerry Jones not being proactive with deals

Dallas has dug itself into a mess that would have been avoidable if they had approached Prescott with a new deal the last offseason.

Mike Florio has also suggested that Jerry Jones cannot admit the truth about his outdated negotiation method.

The Pro Football Talk host persists that the 81-year-old has a bad habit of kicking the can down the road and not being proactive in crucial contract negotiations.

Dak Prescott’s contract stand-off seems to have no visible end in sight and he could be made to play out his deal.

Ultimately, the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is flirting with the idea of testing free agency in 2025.
