The latest NFL salary cap news could be a big boost for all teams, especially the Kansas City Chiefs.

A better than expected updated salary cap will benefit the 32 teams across the NFL, at just the right time for the reigning Super Bowl champions.

After winning the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs are desperate to keep the current roster together.

And that is not easy, with key defensive players Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed among those with expiring deals.

There has been plenty of debate whether the Chiefs will have to prioritise one over the other, and who, or what retaining both could cost them.

Now, there is greater chance of the Chiefs managing to retain both players, and then some.

Salary cap latest

Per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the salary cap for next season is set to increase above expectation.

He cites a couple of reasons for this, including ‘extraordinary’ higher than expected revenues across the NFL for the 2023 season.

Rapoport posted on X: “The NFL announced that the 2024 Salary Cap will be $255.4M per club, with an additional $74M per club payment for player benefits, which includes Performance Based Pay and benefits for retired players.

“Total 2024 player costs will be $329.4M per club, or more than $10.5B league-wide.

“The unprecedented $30M increase per club in this year’s Salary Cap is the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by the clubs and deferred by the players during the Covid pandemic as well as an extraordinary increase in media revenue for the 2024 season.”

The takeaway for the Kansas City Chiefs is that it should now become easier to pay both Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed, along with perhaps adding players on offense too.

‘Thank you Taylor Swift’

The ‘unprecedented’ salary cap increase is partially attributed to the ‘extraordinary’ increase in media revenue.

Many have been making the connection to the Taylor Swift effect. The singer’s budding relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has brought new fans to the sport, with ‘Swifties’ taking an interest in the NFL.

‘Swift and Kelce mania’ has been embraced, and stars like Patrick Mahomes have thrown their support behind it.

Forbes reported a spike in female viewership for the NFL, while The Wrap report that in order to reach the record audiences, there has been a 20 per cent rise in advertising spend for NFL games.

The latest salary cap news is more reflection of the NFL’s financial strength, and fans have taken to social media to hail the Taylor Swift impact.

There were many responses to Rapoport’s post on X, hailing the Taylor Swift impact.

One wrote: “Thanks to Taylor Swift!”, while another added: “Thank you Taylor Swift.”

A third wrote: “Taylor Swift really got the NFL to rewrite the script ACTUALLY WILD.”

Another fan added: “The rest of the NFL better be thanking the Chiefs and Taylor Swift right now. Y’all are welcome for all those extra viewers and increase revenue over the past year.”

A further comment from a NFL fan said: “Thank you Swifties”, with another adding: “See? That’s why they were showing Taylor Swift so much. Now, it was a good thing, I guess.”
