Rich Eisen states Kansas City Chiefs free agency priority, and Draft advice

The Kansas City Chiefs have been urged to focus on defense and not offense during the upcoming period of Free Agency.

For a Super Bowl winning team, the Kansas City Chiefs have a lot to address this off-season.

There are issues with standout players on defense with expiring contracts, notably Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed, and a need to strengthen at left tackle, and at wide receiver.

Amid the desire to bring players back, there is also a temptation and go out and sign a big name on offense, with Mike Evans one highly touted name.

Focus on defense

NFL Network host Rich Eisen believes the Kansas City front office should focus on re-signing their defensive players, and there should be no argument otherwise.

Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed were standout players in the post-season, with the defense providing the structure for Patrick Mahomes to go on and win games.

Eisen, speaking on Rich Eisen Show said: “Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed. You need both of them. Period, end of story. That’s what you address first.

“And then I’d address the tackles. And then you start thinking about weapons for Mahomes.”

There has been some debate over whether the Chiefs can afford to bring back both Jones and Sneed, and this is a major dilemma for the organisation entering Free Agency.

Impressed with Rashee Rice

Eisen argues that the Chiefs are a smart team when it comes to the NFL Draft, and they should back themselves to find another Rashee Rice.

Rice developed strongly over the course of his first season in the NFL and Eisen says the Chiefs should look to add another wide receiver in the draft.

He said: “He gets drafted, he ends up setting a rookie receptions record for the playoffs… so do it again.”

It sounds easy when you put it like that. The Chiefs have not always picked wide receivers well. Skyy Moore has been a disappointment considering the draft investment.

But the Rice pick will give the organisation some confidence, that they can in fact ‘do it again’.
