Super Bowl champion could leave Kansas City this off-season, says NFL expert

Keeping the Kansas City Chiefs together this off-season is going to be tough, and one high profile player is being tipped to leave.

Patrick Mahomes had to overcome a lot of offensive problems this past season, and this was made possible by the Chiefs defense.

Led by Steve Spagnuolo, the Chiefs D were able to keep the team hanging around for long enough for Mahomes to do his thing.

This was summed up in overtime of the Super Bowl, where they restricted the 49ers to three points, for Mahomes to lead a winning touchdown drive.

Chiefs can’t keep everyone

Attention is already turning to next season, and trying to work out which star players with expiring contracts can be kept on.

The Chiefs have taken up an option on Chris Jones’ contract, which we speculated could be bad news for L’Jarius Sneed.

Now, speaking to The Rich Eisen Show, PFF’s Brad Spielberger believes L’Jarius Sneed could be on his way out.

He pointed to the way the Chiefs made way for Sneed to break through in 2022, believing the organisation may back themselves to draft a replacement.

Spielberger explained: “L’Jarius Sneed to me is a fundamental Chiefs philosophical question, where, look at the guy they just played Chevararius Ward.

“He was in the same situation a couple of years ago in Kansas City, but, they drafted a guy by the name of L’Jarius Sneed.

“Now you draft Josh Williams, Trent McDuffie, Chamarri Conner, who played some safety this year. That’s what they do, they churn these day three, late day two defensive back picks.

“I think they want Sneed back, but I wouldn’t bet on it.”

Is L’Jarius Sneed worth making an exception for

The point being made is an astute one, that based on the Kansas City Chiefs’ past pattern of behaviour, the organisation could let the cornerback walk, and get paid elsewhere.

But that doesn’t have to mean the Chiefs are tied into repeating their actions.

The Chiefs may decide Sneed is so talented that he must be retained, and that extending his contract is a bigger priority than any free agent acquisitions.

It may simply come down to what offers Sneed gets from elsewhere, and whether he wants to take the highest offer he can, and how much he wants to stay in Kansas City.

You would like to think a compromise could be reached – but as suggested – don’t bet on it.
