Ahead of the free-agency opener, the Kansas City quarterback has taken a step that could change the course of the team’s roster.
Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes is really willing to give up a few million dollars to go for the three-peat. The QB has agreed to restructure his contract to create an additional $21.6 million in salary cap space for KC, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
It’s worth remembering that in September last year, Mahomes also restructured his contract: he was set to earn $208.1 million between 2023 and 2026.
Back in 2020, he signed a ten-year extension with the Chiefs, making the reigning champion the highest-paid player in the NFL. According to Sportrac, his cap hit in 2024 was, until then, set at $58.6 million.
Following the announcement of the restructuring, Mahomes’ cap hit scheme was updated:
- $37 million (2024)
- $66.2 million (2025)
- $68.6 million (2026)

Full power to win another Super Bowl
Patrick Mahomes took responsibility and once again showed that his leader mentality brings motivation to the rest of the organization. The $21.6 million created in the cap space will make a sizeable difference in what general manager Brett Veach is able to accomplich in free agency.
The five-year, $95 million extension for defensive tackle Chris Jones gave the team an extra boost to stick with the three-peat plan.
So far, KC has brought in some reinforcements for the squad. On defense: safety Deon Bushon, cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, linebackers Jack Cochrane and Cole Christiansen and defensive end Malik Herring.
The new additions are offensive lineman Mike Caliendo and tight end Irv Smith Jr.
Chiefs’ options in free agency
After talks to acquire Darnell Mooney, his three-year deal with the Falcons came as a blow to the Chiefs.
Now, Curtis Samuel is the target. KC needs a tough wide receiver on the team, and Samuel could be the key.
He’s versatile and explosive both before and after receiving the ball. He can also be used as a running back. If he signs with the Chiefs, the offense could get a touch of fun.
