The Kansas City Chiefs have moved to add a new weapon to the offense, bringing in Irv Smith.

Since winning the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs have dreamily been connected with a number of high profile would-be free agents.

But it is more the Chiefs’ style to avoid big splashes, focusing on retaining their key stars, and making smaller additions around the edges.

That is exactly what has happened early on this free agency, with the team’s big business coming with a contract extension for Chris Jones.

Irv Smith signs with Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed a deal to sign tight end Irv Smith, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting he has signed a one-year deal.

Smith adds a younger body at the position to ease reliance on Travis Kelce, and add a new pass-catching weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

In signing for the Chiefs, Smith leaves the Cincinnati Bengals and Mahomes’ rival Joe Burrow. Fans will say he has upgraded.

Smith was a second round draft pick in 2019 with the Minnesota Vikings, before signing a one-year deal a a free agent with the Bengals in 2023.

He turned down a move to the Dolphins at the time, saying he had a better chance to win a Super Bowl with the Bengals. In reality, he was better off with neither.

Smith is now with next season’s expected Super Bowl favourites, the three-peat hunting Chiefs, and has made the team strong.

He has 10 career touchdowns, nine of which came in Minnesota and one in Cincinnati.

Irv Smith welcomed to Kansas City

One of the Chiefs most active players on social media is Charles Omenihu. He reacted to welcome Smith to KC.

Responding to Schefter’s post breaking the news of the deal, Omenihu posted: “I like this !!! Welcome Brodie.”

Smith’s deal will officially be announced in the coming days, once teams can start making the moves official.
