NFL expert highlights ‘big question mark’ that could stop Patrick Mahomes from throwing deep

Patrick Mahomes wants to add a new dynamic to their offense in 2024 but there could be one problem that could hinder the project.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not get caught sleeping in free agency and signed speedster Marquise Brown from free agency.

Moreover, the Chiefs have not replaced the deep threat that Tyreek Hill provided before leaving to become the highest-paid wide receiver with the Miami Dolphins in 2022.

Chiefs’ front office wanted more speed, so drafted Xavier Worthy via the Bills

Nonetheless, Andy Reid and Brett Veach were not completely satisfied with the speed within their ranks.

Therefore, the Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft and selected Xavier Worthy.

As we all know, the Chiefs first-round pick set the 40-yard dash record at the NFL combine by posting a 4.21.

Therefore, the Chiefs now have two vertical threats that will be a nightmare for any secondary in the NFL.

The franchise concluded its first round of OTAs in May and Patrick Mahomes was on the field connecting with his new weapons.

Unfortunately, Xavier Worthy was forced to man the sideline after tweaking his hamstring on Day 2.

Patrick Mahomes believes the team is ‘built to throw the ball deep’ in 2024

Nevertheless, the Chiefs have their tools and made sure to give Mahomes the option of attacking deep in 2024.

On the Pat McAfee Show, the three-time Super Bowl MVP believed they have a ‘team that is built to throw the ball deep’.

Good news for the Chiefs, another problem to consider for the all other 31 teams in the league.

NFL expert points out a crucial problem that could stop Mahomes from throwing deep

However, as pointed out by NFL expert Mina Kimes, there could be one problem still hindering their plans.

“Patrick Mahomes needs the time to execute. The Chiefs’ offensive line played pretty well, despite having issues with penalties… but he was decently well protected,” Kimes explained via NFL on ESPN.

“Now, Donovan Smith is still out there and he is not your starting left tackle and you are looking at a competition potentially between Wanya Morris… and Kingsley Suamataia who they drafted this year.

“That’s a big question mark and protecting the blindside with Patrick Mahomes. If that doesn’t look good early then that might stop him from attacking deep.”

Donovan Smith remains a free agent as Veach opts to keep faith in young talent

Starting left tackle Donovan Smith still resides on the open market and there has been no move to bring him back.

Furthermore, Brett Veach, when asked if he would consider his return, implied they are more focused on their young guys (rookies).

Second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia will rival Wanya Morris for the starting role at left tackle. Morris failed to impress when stepping in for Smith after he was injured.

Therefore, the position of protecting Mahomes will be battled out over the coming months in training camp.

Ultimately, the three-time Super Bowl champion must be given adequate time in the pocket to attack his deep threats.
