Matt Nagy explains how Xavier Worthy is being challenged after early setback at OTAs

The Kansas City Chiefs have wrapped up their second slot of May OTAs and Xavier Worthy has had to adapt his training to his early setback.

Expectations have been high since the Kansas City Chiefs stole the headlines on the first day of the NFL Draft, by choosing the history maker.

During the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Worthy ran a 4.21 40-yard dash which set a new record.

Xavier Worthy’s football ability is questioned by fans but Travis Kelce shuts down the idea

NFL fans questioned if his only key asset was his speed and hinted that he was more of a track star than a football player.

Travis Kelce spoke out against the idea and backed his teammate to become an exceptional wide receiver on the Chiefs roster.

Despite being overjoyed with their first-round selection in the NFL Draft, General Manager Brett Veach did point out one issue they had with Worthy.

Kansas City Chiefs OTA Offseason Workouts

The 21-year-old boasts a skinny frame and weighs in at 165lbs, so Veach wants the receiver to put on more lean mass during the offseason.

Moreover, Veach would like Worthy to weigh in at 175-180lbs come preseason, with this being his ideal weight for a wide receiver.

However, gaining weight is not the only problem in Worthy’s mind.

Xavier Worthy has been inactive during the OTAs due to a leg injury

The Texas Longhorn star has been sidelined with a niggling hamstring injury. Worthy did not pull his hamstring but did tweak it, and he was forced to watch on for half of the OTAs scheduled from May 20-22.

Disappointingly, the speedster has continued to remain as an observer during the second round of the May OTAs.

Patrick Mahomes’ new weapon has been missing valuable reps in training which would go a long way in building their chemistry.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs have not left him to twiddle his thumbs on the bench.

Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy has been working closely with Worthy

Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy explained to the media how they are still testing and challenging Worthy despite his inability to participate.

Chiefs reporter Charles Goodman posted on X: “OC Matt Nagy says WR Xavier Worthy is taking mental reps during practice while dealing with his injury.

“He’s telling the coaches on the sidelines where he’s supposed to go and what he’s supposed to do on a given rep.”

During reps, that he would be involved in, Worthy has been articulating to coaches about what he should be doing, what route to run, and suggesting how the play can develop.

Worthy has been mentally challenged on the sidelines during key reps

His inability to play has not stopped the Chiefs from mentally challenging their exciting new talent.

NFL expert James Palmer explained how Andy Reid’s wide receiver training camp is the ‘toughest’ in all of football.

Worthy will be eager to slot back in when he gets the green light, but for now he must develop his football intelligence with Nagy.
