What the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag’ means as Chiefs place it on L’Jarius Sneed

The Kansas City Chiefs have made their first statement move in the NFL offseason since becoming successive Super Bowl champions.

L’Jarius Sneed has been given the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag’ which puts other franchises on high alert.

The offseason is a time when teams look to secure the best deals, whether that be in the free agency market or securing high-value trade stock.

As fresh contract conversations roll on, franchises do also prepare to lose players.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not entertain the idea of their cornerback hitting free agency and losing a key defensive asset for nothing.

In late February, the Chiefs explained to the cornerback that they would be placing him on the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag’ if a long-term deal had not been agreed.

The 2020 fourth-round pick produced his best season sporting the red and white jersey. The 27-year-old concluded the regular season with two interceptions, 14 pass breakups and did not allow a touchdown while in coverage.

What is the non-exclusive franchise tag?

This form of tag permits the player in question to converse with other teams to secure a trade.

Sneed now has the option to sign an offer sheet with another franchise.

If this occurs, the Kansas City Chiefs will have the exclusive right to match the offer on the table.

However, if the Chiefs decline the opportunity, in compensation they will receive two first-round draft picks if Sneed opts to leave.

What is the exclusive tag?

The exclusive tag prohibits the player or agent from seeking another team’s offer sheet completely.

The franchise then is compiled to offer a 1-year deal based on the average salary of the top five players in the tagged player’s position. On the other hand, they will offer 120% salary of the previous year’s earnings – whichever deal is greater is what the player receives.

What is the transition tag?

The transition tag works the same way as the non-exclusive tag. However, the franchise that tagged the player will receive no compensatory draft picks if the player chooses to leave.

What next for L’Jarius Sneed

The two-time Super Bowl winner can now speak with other franchises and determine the best move for him.

Additionally, Sneed can work with the Chiefs to try and secure a long-term deal which he has desired.

Andy Reid was adamant that Chiefs Kingdom wanted to keep Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed.

Reports have suggested the Chiefs are optimistic they will secure Jones to a new deal.

It is unclear whether Sneed will be able to secure a new deal, with the cap space being a stumbling block.

If ‘Big Red’ wants him, the Chiefs will do everything to make it possible.

Nevertheless, there will be suitors for one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL offseason.
