Steve Spagnuolo jokes he wants ‘gifted’ Patrick Mahomes to change position, he’s capable of anything

Patrick Mahomes is the greatest quarterback of this current generation, much to the pleasure of Kansas City Chiefs fans.

Ever since he came into the NFL, we have seen Patrick Mahomes grow into his role as the new face of the NFL.

Mahomes has three Super Bowl wins already, becoming the first quarterback to go back to back since Tom Brady.

One man who works adjacent to Mahomes is defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who both benefits from the quarterback’s work, while also benefitting him with one of the best units in the NFL.

Steve Spagnuolo praises Patrick Mahomes

Chiefs coordinator Steve Spagnuolo made an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show in which he praised Patrick Mahomes, and talked up the way he works for the team and his total desire to win.

He said: “Patrick is all about winning, he’s all about the team, and when I am on the other side of the ball that makes you feel tremendously good. We believe in him.

“You watch Pat operate day to day, he walks by my office on the way to the quarterback meetings, and on the field, he’s all about making the other guys better.

“Patrick doesn’t get out there and make it all about him. he wants to win so bad, he doesn’t care how it happens, and that’s the beauty of Patrick Mahomes, and the beauty of the rest of the guys who have confidence in him, they will roll with him at any time.”

Referring to the overtime Super Bowl win over the 49ers, Spanguolo added: “I say ‘thank God we have Patrick Mahomes, at the end of the game we give up a field goal and you don’t know what’s going to happen and he goes right down the other end [and scores].”

McAfee actually called Spagnuolo out on this, saying everybody in the world did in fact know what was going to happen, believing with absolute certainty that Mahomes would throw for a touchdown when it really mattered, and he delivered.

Mahomes capable of anything

Steve Spagnuolo said due to Patrick Mahomes’ pure ability and desire to succeed, he is a player he would love to have on the defensive side of the ball – even though in reality, this won’t be possible.

He explained, jokingly: “I want to see if he can be the first two way player, get him over to play safety, get him over to play corner.

“I don’t think coach Reid is going to go for it. How about that right, wouldn’t that set a legacy?”

He added that he believes Mahomes could genuinely do anything he set his mind to.

“That guy can do whatever he wants, if he wants to be a ping-pong champion, he can do that, he can be a golf [champion] if he wants to be, he’s that naturally gifted. He’s a great person, I love being around him, all kinds of energy.”

Mahomes dallied with baseball before entering the NFL, and last summer he bought a stake in a Formula 1 team, so multi-sport success cannot be ruled out.

He also has plans to become a NFL team owner after he retires, but that is a long way off yet. Mahomes has plenty more to give on the field.
