The Dallas Cowboys have clocked off from their last scheduled OTA in May and Mike McCarthy has shared a glowing review of one player.

America’s Team has been hard at work as they lay the premature foundations for preseason through voluntary workouts.

These key training programs pave the way for the first mandatory training session scheduled for June 6-8.

Moreover, the OTAs symbolize an excellent opportunity for players to make their first offseason statements and impress their coaches.

Players will see the voluntary workouts as the first chance to turn heads

Various players will be hopeful of stepping up and undergoing significant strides during the offseason program.

Battlelines will already be drawn in the voluntary workouts as players compete against one another for starting positions.

However, some players’ main goal is to make the final 53-man roster before the 2024 season begins.

Players will have various aspirations for the upcoming season, but one player’s situation is clear as day in the offseason.

Trey Lance is at a paramount stage in his NFL career and is set for an all-or-nothing preseason

Trey Lance is entering a crucial year for his Cowboys and NFL career.

After three seasons in the NFL, Trey Lance has only started four games. A season-ending injury in 2022 and the emergence of rookie sensation Brock Purdy saw him traded to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick.

Last year, the 24-year-old lost a battle with second-string Cooper Rush in training camp to become Dak Prescott’s second in command.

Rush has proved to be an admirable backup to Prescott and went 4-1 after the latter endured an injury in 2022.

Lance has been receiving his fair share of the reps in training and is set to be given an excellent chance of becoming the second-string QB.

Mike McCarthy has been full of praise for Lance during the OTAs

Mike McCarthy has high expectations for the young player and has been impressed with his production during the OTAs.

Per Cowboys reporter Michael Gehlken, when speaking to the media at the final May OTA session, the head coach reiterated he has ‘definitely’ seen significant progress.

“Now starting to get the timing with the routes. …He’s close to being a master of the system. He has a really high understanding. …He just needs as many reps as he can.”

McCarthy will be giving Lance a cut of the reps to earn the spot of backup

McCarthy, who he aswell is entering a critical season, was full of praise for Lance and highlighted how he will continue to see a large volume of reps.

Lance’s stock is at an all-time low in the NFL and will need to establish himself as a worthy backup to raise it.

Ultimately, the Cowboy will understand that if he cannot beat out Rush in camp, then his options in 2025 free agency could be extremely limited.

It’s now or never for Lance at this stage in his career.
