Trey Lance has endured a difficult first number of seasons in the NFL and now faces a challenging off-season with the Cowboys.

Trey Lance has a big task upcoming to establish himself with the Dallas Cowboys. Entering the summer, let’s remind ourselves exactly how he got here.

Trey Lance – first season

In the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers made the bold move of finalising a trade with the Miami Dolphins to secure the third overall pick. Trey Lance was selected by the Californian based team to many people’s surprise, as they were on a mission to secure a franchise quarterback.

Initially, the intention was for the player fresh out of South Dakota to sit behind and learn from Jimmy Garoppolo. After the 49ers’ starting quarterback was injured, Lance filled in and started his first ever game in the NFL against the Seattle Seahawks. Lance would be used sporadically for the remainder of the season, with Garoppolo being susceptible to injuries.

Prior to the 2022 season, Kyle Shanahan stated Lance would be the starting QB for the 49ers. After suffering defeat to the Chicago Bears on the opening game, the Minnesota born talent suffered a season ending ankle injury.

The future for Lance looked very bleak and his position was filled by the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Brock Purdy.

Surprisingly, the latter’s exceptional performances guided the franchise to an unexpected NFC Championship game which ended in defeat. Upon his return to training camp for the 2023 season, Lance was met with the eye-opening reality he was now the third string quarterback after Purdy and Sam Darnold were favoured over him.

Dallas Cowboys Trade

Only a matter of days after it was announced Lance was now third choice, the Dallas Cowboys traded for the third-year quarterback – sacrificing a fourth-round pick. The Texas based franchise confirmed Lance would be a third string quarterback.

The 23-year-old is yet to play in a single game for the Dallas Cowboys and is no doubt hungry to prove to himself and everyone else why he was selected so high in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Cooper Rush is the backup signal caller to the face of the franchise Dak Prescott, however, the former will be battling with Lance during the off-season training camp for the bragging rights of the no. 2 quarterback – this is now a crucial preseason for Lance to rebuild his NFL career.

The coaching staff will want healthy competition, while owner Jerry Jones will be keen for Lance to show value, and demonstrate he was worth giving up a pick for.
