It’s safe to say that the Dallas Cowboys intend to explore new approaches for the 2024 season. Obviously, with the intention of flying higher.
One thing is guaranteed: Dak Prescott is the team’s starting quarterback, at least until further notice.
As a backup, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance may battle it out for the QB2 position, but both will be at coach Mike McCarthy’s disposal for any unforeseen circumstances or needs.

One less prospect in the Draft for Trey Lance
Before the 2023 season began, Dallas decided to make a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for Lance. Jerry Jones’ team got the signal-caller in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft.
The product of North Dakota didn’t fulfil the expectations of the Niners and didn’t take on any major responsibilities on America’s Team either: since he arrived, he’s only been in practice reps.
This season’s training camp will basically decide who, him or Rush, will be the backup QB.
The Cowboys expect more consistent results from Prescott, but it’s worth bearing in mind that all three quarterbacks are in the last year of their contracts with the franchise.
Front Office and staff have opinions about Trey Lance
His last appearance in a regular season game was in 2022 in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. The player left with an ankle injury that ended his season.
The 24-year-old has yet to prove his talent on the field, but that doesn’t mean the Dallas organisation doesn’t have faith in him.
“We’re excited to see him,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones claimed. “He’s done nothing but impress around here. He’s a pro, he works his ass off. No one gets to see him, because he hasn’t been on the field (because) we got him late. But we’re going to get to see him.”
Quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien is curious to see more of the signal-caller in the activities (OTAs, minicamp, training camp and preseason games) that will take place before the season actually kicks off: “That’s our payday in football, you do so much practicing, and that’s been the reality for him, the scout team, so I’m super excited to watch him with I guess what you would call these game-like reps.”
He added: “Trey is super coachable, so it’s been awesome working with him. It’s not just hearsay for him, he works at it, whether he’s with us or on his own time. It’s obvious that he works at it and we’re appreciative of that.”
Mike McCarthy projected what Lance should be doing in 2024
The Cowboys head coach, in a press conference on Wednesday, addressed the improvement he has seen in Lance.
“The athletic ability is top notch. We’ve adjusted some things in his (throwing) motion. You can see the improvement and timing. … Him and I talk about the preseason quite often, because that’s what we’re building towards.” said McCarhty.
He also made it clear that the quarterback will play a “large part” of the preseason.
Dallas declined his fifth-year option for 2025, worth $22.4 million.
