Colin Cowherd spells out Dak Prescott effect on NFL and voices ‘trapped’ fear

The Dak Prescott soap opera is still as lively as ever. The Dallas Cowboys’ organisation has already given notice, so the time has come to wait for the results to emerge.

2024 could be the quarterback’s last season in Dallas – he could then test the market after spending his entire career with the star team.

The signal-caller is coming off an All Pro year and has been tipped as a possible MVP. 4,516 yards for 36 touchdowns.

Despite the waiting and caution, Jerry Jones & Co. have already shown their desire to extend with the QB.

Colin Cowherd’s four contract factors

In the “The Herd With Colin Cowherd” show, the host discusses the factors about a quarterback that will influence his contract situation, whether or not he renews it.

According to Cowherd, there are four essential criteria to take into consideration in a player:

He mentions the names of Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow as talented signal-callers who fall short in at least one of these areas.

Next, he analyses Prescott’s status and the moment he is going through with the Cowboys: “One of the toughest decisions in the league os Dak (Prescott). When he’s healthy, you can win 10, 11 games. When he’s healthy, 500 or better, he would have a market. No question the Raiders would take him tomorrow if he was available.”

The sports anchor went further and brought up Jerry Jones as a justification for the franchise’s QB situation.

“The truth is: Jerry Jones is petrified of being irrelevant. Jerry’s ego feeds up on relevance. Dak is your quarterback, he’s upright, you’re relevant.”

The “Dak dilemma”

Cowherd mentions the Bird Exception, a term that exists in the NBA (named after Larry Bird) that says you can re-sign your free agents who have been with the team over three years and it can go over the cap.

The host used this reference to say that in the NFL, this could be called the “Dak Dilemma”.

“If you’re a football team that has a good quarterback, but he fills those four boxes, he’s productive, the team wins, an occasional playoff win, he’s reliable, mostly heathy and has tremendous leverage… What do you do when a quarterback mostly fills those four boxes, but he’s good and you have to pay him great money? You’re become exacly what the Cowboys have been under dak: relevant and never elite.”

And he finished with his verdict for Dallas over Prescott: “Once again I think the Cowboys will be trapped.”
