Jerry Jones has a hands-on football approach as the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, but should he take a step back from the sports side of proceedings?
America’s Team has been at the center of the national media throughout the offseason but for mostly the wrong reasons.
The franchise is in an unprecedented situation, where it must rely on rookies to fill the gaps left by free-agent starters, all the while, some cornerstone players face uncertain futures.
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are jostling for new contracts and both could reset the market in their respective positions.
Jerry Jones has not entertained negotiations of key player contracts in the offseason
Jerry Jones has not approached either player and their parties to start the negotiations. Moreover, the longer the contractual problems remain unresolved, the more bleak their futures become.
The prices for both players will steadily rise the longer the franchise ‘kicks the can down the road’.
America’s Team has failed to reach the holy grail of the Super Bowl since 1995, one year after the introduction of the salary cap.

Jerry Jones managed to win three Super Bowl rings in his first seven years of ownership – one of the greatest sporting transitions in history.
However, their lack of postseason success has been deafening and much of the blame has landed at Jones’ feet.
The Dallas Cowboys have grown to be a global brand under Jerry Jones’ leadership
Despite being an excellent businessman, growing the franchise into a super brand, and making the Cowboys the most valuable team in the world, his football intelligence has been questioned.
In addition to being the owner, Jerry Jones holds the titles of President and General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys.
Some owners will stick to just that but Mr. Jones is fixated on being involved in football matters.
Mike Fisher says Jones should appoint Will McClay the new General Manager
Cowboys expert Mike Fisher has proposed one move that could re-energize the franchise for the better.
“Jerry, give the GM title to Will McClay and mean it,” Fisher said on his podcast this morning.
“I do predict one day that Will McClay will want to run his own team, and wouldn’t it be a real shame if that’s in Detroit or Houston? The day-to-day operation of this thing, give it to Will.”
Will McClay is the Cowboys’ Vice President of player personnel and is the closest thing to being General Manager without having the title.
Jerry Jones can still be involved with the running of the team but it could be a suggestion to leave the finer details to McClay.
McClay has powered his way through the Cowboys’ front office hierarchy since 2002
McClay has been a part of the franchise since 2002 when he joined as a pro scout. In 2017, he earned his current role after moving up the ranks through the organization.
No one knows the teams better than McClay and he could helped guide the franchise into a new era.
Sometimes, it is better to take a backseat and let another key figure with fresh ideas and a new approach breathe life back into the team.
McClay has had interest shown in acquiring his services from other teams around the league. Therefore, it could be wise for Jerry Jones to offload the title and share the workload before it is too late.
