Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach shares reason why he is not interested in job opportunities elsewhere

The Kansas City Chiefs have become the powerhouse of the NFL and one of their coaches has shared his viewpoint about pursuing opportunities elsewhere.

One of the key problems the best teams in the NFL will encounter is other franchises prizing away their coaches.

Assistants are, in many cases, head coaches in the making and most will have the final goal of landing a top job.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be dealing with that exact problem, as being the reigning back-to-back Super Bowl champions is a testament to the caliber of the coaching staff.

The Kansas City Chiefs boasts an elite core of coaching staff in 2023

Andy Reid is one of the most successful head coaches of all time and has built up a coaching tree in his NFL career.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has rejuvenated himself within the coaching scene after his poor tenure as the Chicago Bears’ head coach.

Steve Spagunolo has been one of the greatest defensive minds we have seen in football and remains the only assistant coach to win Super Bowls with separate franchises.

Dave Merritt has been a revelation for the Chiefs as he has produced some of the best defensive backs

However, the coaching circle does not stop there, and defensive back coach Dave Merritt has flourished in Missouri.

Since 2019, Merritt has seen the Chiefs boast one of the best secondaries in the NFL.

Moreover, he has nurtured and developed some of the best-emerging talents in the league.

L’Jarius Sneed evolved into one of the best lockdown cornerbacks and rightfully earned a mega contract in the NFL.

Due to cap space demands, the Chiefs traded Sneed to the Tennessee Titans and Merritt described the loss as them trying to replace Michael Jordan.

Trent McDuffie is the latest project in the making for Merritt

Furthermore, Chiefs sensation Trent McDuffie looks on course to become one of the elites in the business.

At 23 years old, McDuffie has been a key foundation when winning two rings and has earned First-Team All-Pro honors.

Merritt can be accredited with his development and is set to create another huge defensive-back talent.

Merritt responds to the media about pursuing a new job in the NFL

At the latest Chiefs OTA session, the media questioned Merritt about pursuing job opportunities elsewhere and moving up the ladder.

“I still have a 16-year-old daughter that I’m trying to be a father to… so that is still my goal,” Merritt explained to the media.

“She’s going to be a junior this year, so I want to be around for her.”

Merritt has shut down talks about considering another job with another NFL team because of his dedication to his daughter.

The Chiefs’ DB coach’s admirable mentality of wanting to remain a father figure for his daughter prevents him from earning a new job.

Nonetheless, once Merritt feels comfortable, the Chiefs may have to say goodbye to their coach or they could give him a promotion within the franchise.

That day will eventually come and the Chiefs will need a plan in place.
