Andy Reid coaching tree, biggest successes and disappointments

The Kansas City Chiefs head coach has become one of the most decorated and respected play callers in the 32 years within the realms of the NFL.

Reid was appointed head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999 and remained there until 2012 when he was given his marching orders.

Therefore, it should be no surprise that Reid has cultivated a largely successful coaching tree.

Here are some of his mentees across his journey:

Sean McDermott – The current Buffalo Bills head coach held down numerous roles on the defensive side of the ball for Andy Reid’s coaching staff. While at the Eagles, McDermott moved from defensive backs coach to linebackers coach and finally defensive coordinator.

In 2022, the Nebraskan native guided the Bills to a prestigious 13-3 record and has made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons in Buffalo. The only thing missing now from his resume is a Super Bowl appearance.

Creating legends

John Harbaugh – Was Reid’s special teams coach and prior to his move, the defensive backs coach, when affiliated with the Eagles for 10 years. Harbaugh has been one of the most successful disciples of Reid, being one of three to win a Super Bowl. Securing five AFC North division titles and boasting a 160-99 Baltimore Ravens HC record has made him a legend in Maryland.

Steve Spagnuolo – Granted he has been a very poor head coach when given the opportunity, however, it is hard to deny his excellence when building defenses. A Super Bowl winning head coach with the New York Giants and securing a further two when reuniting with Reid at the Chiefs, he is the only coordinator in NFL history to win rings with separate franchises.

Pat Schurmur – The less said about this one the better, Reid and Schurmur’s careers crossed path when the latter became the former’s quarterback coach.

After been given a promising opportunity at the Cleveland Browns, the head coach was unsurprisingly fired as he finished with a record of 9-23 over two seasons. The New York Giants rolled the dice with the 58-year-old but the gamble fell flat on its face. A carbon copy record of 9-23 at the Giants this time was enough for the Schurmur to be sent packing after a couple of seasons.

Super Bowl winners

Todd Bowles – Not a disappointment to say the least but failed on his previous head coaching quest. Bowles had very brief stints as Reid’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach whilst at the Eagles. In 2015, Bowles signed the deal to become the head coach of the New York Jets. Despite a blistering start to life in the Big Apple, matters quickly turned stale. Four Years in the state of New York saw Bowles fired after finishing with a record of 26-41.

However, he has developed a knack of building robust defences and has won a Super Bowl when Tom Brady guided the Bucs to a ring. A poor record as a head coach is a struggle to overlook after being given a fair amount of time. Now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers HC, Bowles has another shot to right the wrongs.
