As Dak Prescott’s contract with the Cowboys remains undecided, the team is facing a period of instability at quarterback. The absence of a new contractual agreement so far raises questions about the player’s future in the squad and, consequently, who will take over as leader of the offense.
In this context, the Dallas Cowboys needs to consider a plan B in case they don’t extend with Dak Prescott. The question hangs over whether Cooper Rush or even a gamble like Trey Lance could be viable alternatives to fill the void.
There is also speculation that the Cowboys may be focusing on the quarterback position in the next Draft. With the 24th pick of the first round in their hands, the team has an opportunity to add a young talent to the roster, considering investment for the future.
However, it’s important to emphasise that they can’t limit themselves to the search for a new signal-caller. Given that several positions require improvement, the team’s roadmap for the event must be extensive and carefully planned.

Is it worth using the first pick on a QB
In the latest episode of the Speak show, the discussion revolved around whether it was a good idea or not for America’s Team to go after a quarterback in the first round.
LeSean McCoy promptly supports this decision and believes that the Cowboys have a good reputation for developing rookies very positively.
“Jerry (Jones) finally sees what I see”, he claimed. “I would love for them to draft a quarterback.”
“Because I will give the Cowboys some credit. From getting a guy like Tony Romo, he wasn’t a high draft pick at all. Getting a guy like Dak Prescott, fourth round… So you sure can develop these guys.”
“Even if you don’t get a number one type of guy, they develop them. And I think that, for this team to get to where they need to be at, they can have Dak, because he’s shown what he can do. In the postseason he doesn’t show up.”
He continued to emphasize the importance of focusing on extending Cee Dee Lamb’s contract as a determining factor for Dallas’s successful performance in the 2024 season.
“So if you wanna win and go to the promise land with all these other players, you have to pay Cee Dee Lamb, I don’t think they’re gonna play around with him because he’s that good. They need him.”
“If it’s the Cowboys and Jerry Jones, if you wanna get back to some old days in the 90s when you was running things, you gotta move on from Dak Prescott because if not, you’re gonna do great in the regular season. Playoff time comes, you know what he does…”
Other teams that drafted QBs despite already having an absolute starter
The show host Emmanuel Acho brought into the debate examples of other franchises that chose to pick a signal-caller in the Draft as an assurance for the future, and are now reaping the rewards of a supposedly “risky” decision made in the past.
“But the smartest thing the Cowboys could do is draft a quarterback because Noah didn’t wait till it started raining to build an arc. Don’t wait until you need something to go get something.”
“I think about the Chiefs. You had Alex Smith, you draft Pat Mahomes. Think about the Packers, James Jones – twice. You had Brett Favre, you draft Aaron Rodgers. You have Aaron Rodgers, you draft Jordan Love.”
“You don’t wait until you need something to go get something. It’s easier to get a job or you have a job and so it’s easier to get a quarterback while you have a quarterback because then you’re not pressed to play the quarterback.”
