Former NFL general manager names the replacement quarterback Dallas should draft to replace Dak Prescott

One ESPN analyst is thinking ahead about a possible young name to fill in for the Cowboys’ franchise QB.

Dak Prescott will be the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in 2024. For now, there are still no talks about a possible renewal of the player and the doors are open as to who will be the signal-caller in 2025.

Dallas’ premature exit from the playoffs after losing to the Green Bay Packers stirred up mixed feelings for owner Jerry Jones, who predicted that the team would go all-in this season.

However, the offseason is underway and the franchise seems to be going through a difficult moment, in which they need to find solutions but in reality, only more doubts are coming in.

We’re already into April and there are just a few days left until the NFL Draft, arguably one of the most important events of the offseason for teams that are facing fragility in some positions.

So, considering the current situation of America’s Team, i.e. unimpressive offseason, lack of cap space money and the pause in the Prescott saga, former New York Jets general manager and current ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum decided to give some thoughts on what he would do in the Draft if he were Jerry Jones.

NFL Combine

Michael Penix Jr. tipped for Cowboys

Tannenbaum suggested that the Cowboys should select Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft. The former GM paralleled the pick of Jordan Love by the Green Bay Packers when they still had Aaron Rodgers and the Baltimore Ravens’ choice of Lamar Jackson when they had Joe Flacco.

He explained: “Brett Favre was in the prime of his career when Aaron Rodgers fell, and they took him. Now, the difference with Jordan Love, they gave up a fourth-round pick and moved up… Joe Flacco was in the prime of his career, Baltimore moved up [and] look how that worked out with Lamar Jackson. That’s what great organizations do.

“They take advantage of opportunities and all I’m saying is I think that Dak Prescott’s better, but I’m hard pressed to say that any of us think that he’s $52 million per year better than Penix.

“If you watch Michael Penix throw the ball, like, gosh, Michael Penix is a talented player who’s had three season ending injuries to ACLs, but he did play the last two years healthy and he ran sub 4.46 yesterday.”

The 23-year-old prospect played college football at Indiana and Washington, winning the 2023 Maxwell Award and leading the latter to a 2024 national championship appearance.

Things Dallas must consider before the Draft

Although the analyst is starting to think about a possible change of scenery in Dallas for the 2025 season, he made it clear that he doesn’t know what the organization is waiting for to re-sign its QB: “It’s only gonna get more expensive. So, what are we waiting for?”.

When asked if he would advise Prescott to be open to the market if he were his agent, he didn’t hesitate: “100 per cent, because it will allow you to, like, really see what your value is.”

“And I think there’s enough teams out there, you can fill up like Denver and New Orleans, there’ll be enough teams out there that can need a quarterback.”

Sooner or later, the Cowboys will have to make a tough decision that will certainly change the path of the franchise.

With Dak Prescott or not, there are still other very important pieces to hold the team together that need to be taken into consideration. And that’s exactly what seems to be scaring the organization.
