Former NFL scout explains how Dallas Cowboys player might have been drafted too early by his old team

The Dallas Cowboys have numerous offseason problems and one of them revolves around Dak Prescott’s successor if he was to leave in free agency next year.

Despite the media pressure, Jerry Jones has not budged in extending Prescott this offseason.

Some reports even suggest that the front office could be content with letting the 30-year play out the remaining year of his contract.

Therefore, in 2025 free agency, the signal-caller can freely test the open market, irrelevant whether the franchise chooses to offer a new deal.

Prescott’s no-tag clause means the Cowboys could look for a successor in 2025

The no franchise tag clause could have prevented this but both parties agreed to this term back in 2021.

So, there is a growing possibility that America’s Team may be forced to look closer to home when locating a successor.

The Cowboys plan to give their 2023 third-string quarterback Trey Lance more reps in preseason training.

Dallas traded their fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2023 NFL Draft to acquire his services.

However, due to a season-ending injury in his sophomore season, the 24-year-old suffered with the emergence of Brock Purdy.

Lance must beat Cooper Rush in training camp to earn second-string role

Lance could see a promotion to the Cowboys’ backup quarterback, but he must battle the established Cooper Rush who has proved excellent value for the role.

Unfortunately, Lance’s career has never taken off and he has only started four games in three seasons.

The odds are stacked against the Minnesota native and there was talk about him returning to his native state during the offseason.

Ex-NFL scout believes the 49ers could have over-evaluated Lance in 2021

Former NFL scout and podcast host John Middlekauff believes the 49ers could have made a mistake when drafting Lance.

“A huge thing he (Lance) hung his hat on was character. A really good guy, [which is] why the 49ers liked him, super high character guy,” Middlekauff explained on 3&Out.

“We get on [to] guys who are low character guys, but sometimes you can over-evaluate guys because they are high character and the skill-set is not quite what you want.”

Ultimately, Middlekauff believes that Lance’s bubbly character and high energy could have clouded the coaches’ judgment.

Lance must become Prescott’s back up otherwise he is set to be a free agent in 2025

Lance is at a pivotal point in his career where he must resurrect himself or the NFL could leave him behind.

His stock is at an all-time low and a minimal portfolio will deter many franchises from taking a gamble on him.

The young quarterback enters the final year of his rookie deal, with there being no reason to trigger his fifth-year clause, he will be a free agent come 2025.
