The Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott dominates the chatter that takes place in The Star but what is the situation like behind him?
As of this moment, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance are the backup quarterbacks for America’s Team.
Currently, Rush has one year remaining on his contract in Dallas and has been a reliable backup to Prescott.
Cooper Rush creates franchise history
The 30-year-old is the only quarterback in Cowboys history to win his first five starts.
Between week 2 and week 5 of the 2022 season, he guided the Cowboys to four victories.
During that impressive run, he did not throw a single interception.

Rush’s first start came back in the 2021 season against the Minnesota Vikings.
He threw an interception but heroically led the charge downfield in the final minute to throw a touchdown to Amari Cooper and win the game.
FanDuel released a post yesterday ranking the top 10 best backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
Lance ranks third on NFL backup list
Surprisingly, Trey Lance was ranked the third-best on the list.
Ironically, he was named the third-string quarterback behind Rush in 2023.
The 23-year-old ranks higher than Joe Flacco, Jameis Winston, and Kenny Pickett.
Lance was a hot prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft and was picked as their third overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers.
Lance suffered a season-ending injury
In his first season, he sat behind Jimmy Garoppolo and would sporadically play.
The 2022 season saw him as the starting quarterback in his sophomore year but suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
A mix of the injury and the rise of Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy meant Lance’s time on the West Coast was over.
Furthermore, in 2023 the Cowboys traded their fourth-round pick for Lance.
Nevertheless, he was named the third choice by Mike McCarthy come the season opener.
It is a surprise that FanDuel ranked Lance that high whilst only starting four games in his NFL career.
This is before you realize he was not America’s Team’s backup signal-caller. Rush and Lance will battle it out in training camp for the honor of playing the supporting role to Prescott.
