Against the odds, the Dallas Cowboys have decided to retain the services of head coach Mike McCarthy.
After the play-off defeat to Green Bay, Dallas were strongly tipped to fire Mike McCarthy and go for one of the big name coaches on the market.
Bill Belchick’s name was heavily discussed, so it has come as some surprise that Mike McCarthy has been retained.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is know for his loyalty, despite his determination to ‘win now’.

Reaction to Mike McCarthy decision
There was a very split reaction to the Dallas Cowboys deciding to keep Mike McCarthy.
The Ringer host Bill Simmons wrote on X: “This can’t be true.”
Skip Bayless was not at all happy, blasting: “Jerry Jones just sent this message to his country club of a locker room: “It’s OK you just gave up 48 at home when the most this franchise had ever given up in a playoff game was 38! It’s OK that you effectively lost 4 of your last 5! Let’s run it back! Maybe we’ll get lucky!””
But there was some positive reaction, with some arguing the decision gives the Cowboys some necessary stability.
Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman wrote: “Makes sense. 36 wins over the last 3 years. Jerry didn’t make a decision out of emotion.”
And this was backed by former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, who wrote in reply to Sherman: “Facts.”
This one will rumble on and on. The pain of the play-off loss is still raw, and watching the divisional round this weekend won’t make it any easier.
