The Cowboys have reportedly emerged as a ‘sleeper team’ to trade for Titans star running back Derrick Henry.

There’s less than a week to go before the NFL’s Oct. 31 trade deadline, and so far it’s been pretty quiet on the Cowboys’ front.

The likes of Cedrick Wilson, Zach Ertz and Patrick Surtain have all been tentatively linked to Dallas. However, Jerry Jones went on record this week to say he’s happy with the team’s direction and that anyone looking to make a deal will first have to approach the Cowboys.

Cowboys reportedly a ‘sleeper team’ to trade for Derrick Henry

According to the latest reports, though, Dallas are a ‘sleeper team’ to trade for one of the league’s best running backs.

Tennessee star Derrick Henry Tennessee is in the final year of his contract, and with the Titans recently trading away Kevin Byard, rumors have emerged about other marquee players exiting.

The Ravens have been strongly linked with the 2020 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, but now the Cowboys have emerged as a potential landing spot for Henry.

Those are the words of Tony Pauline, a ‘Consulting Editor and NFL Draft Analyst at Sportskeeda’.

‘The sleeper team expected to be in the market for Henry are the Dallas Cowboys,’ he writes. ‘The belief from many is Henry could end up in the NFC East.’

Henry is in the final season of his four-year, $50 million contract with Tennessee, including an average annual salary of $12.5 million. Any deal with the Cowboys would hinge on Tennessee’s willingness to eat some of the money remaining on Henry’s contract, estimated to be around $6.2 million.

Any team trading for the former Heisman Trophy-winner would have to take on between $6.5-7 million in remaining money on his deal – a not insignificant sum for a 30-year-old in the last year of his contract.

Henry would make the Cowboys legit Super Bowl contenders

However, the fit is certainly a giddying prospect. Henry is still one of the league’s best RBs, and has been performing in a team that’s currently 2-4 for the season. In six games this season, Henry has rushed for 425 yards on 98 carries (4.3 YPC) and three touchdowns to go along with 11 receptions on 13 targets for 117 yards receiving.

The Cowboys moved on from Ezekiel Elliott last season, and have entrusted Tony Pollard with the bulk of the workload. He is averaging 3.9 yards per carry and has just one game with over 100 rushing yards as a part of a Dallas offense that has the seventh-worst red-zone touchdown percentage in the NFL.

The Cowboys also sit 21st in yards per carry, and so pairing Henry with Pollard would provide Mike McCarthy’s offense with a serious boost.

It’s a risk gambling that much on a 30-year-old, but if it works and he clicks with Dak, the Cowboy’s Super Bowl odds raise substantially.

Henry is a beast still just about in his prime and the Cowboys should make a move for him.
