Would the Cowboys be able to acquire Patrick Surtain? Exploring a potential blockbuster deal

The trade deadline is always filled with reports regarding who is going where, and this year is no exception.

As you might expect, the Dallas Cowboys are no stranger to trade rumours, and with a 4-2 record, the team will likely be buyers.

Who they’ll buy, though, is anybody’s guess by the time the deadline rolls around on Halloween.

The One that got away

One of the more exciting trade names being tossed around is Patrick Surtain of the Denver Broncos, per CBS Sports.

The 23-year-old, who was a First-team All-Pro in 2022 cornerback, is in the third year of a four-year, $20.9 million contract with the Broncos, which could make him an attractive rental option.

It also wouldn’t be the first time the Cowboys were reportedly in the market for Surtain, as they had apparently gone after him ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

The son of a former NFL cornerback by the same name, the younger Surtain wound up being selected by the Cowboys that year with the ninth overall pick.

There was good reason for the Cowboys in 2021 to be in the market for a cornerback, as the team had allowed a record 54 touchdowns that season in 473 points.

Instead, the Cowboys made a coaching change in that department as Dan Quinn replaced Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator in 2021.

As things sit right now, the Cowboys have some youth and experience at the cornerback position, with 33-year-old Stephon Gilmore signing over the off-season to compliment 24-year-old DaRon Bland.

Meanwhile, Trevon Diggs is done for the season after tearing his ACL on September 21 during 1-on-1 drills in practice.

Even though he won’t be back this year, Diggs is in the Cowboys’ long-term plans, signing a five-year $97 million extension in July, but the team reportedly would like to add someone to compliment him for future years.

That’s where Surtain would fit into this equation because, at 24, he’s got many NFL years ahead of him and has already made a significant impact in this league in a short time.

Add to that the fact that the Broncos have been a disaster all year, allowing an NFL-high 440.3 yards per game after six weeks.

Therefore, you’d think Denver would be sellers, seeing as they’re currently 1-5 at the bottom of the AFC West standings.

In just over two years, Surtain has defended 30 passes, six in 2023, making nearly 150 tackles (143) for his career, plus he’s made a total of seven interceptions.

Because of that and his age, if the Broncos decide to move on from Surtain, they’d probably want significant compensation.

Surtain, though, has been reported to be an untouchable Bronco, and he’s expressed interest in staying in the Mile-High City.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Surtain discussed his future in Denver, saying: “I plan on being here my whole career. That’s how I want it to end up. I love the organization. I love the city.”

After this season, Surtain is eligible for a contract extension and could be in store for a gigantic payday.

Given all the players the team resigned ahead of the regular season what the Cowboys can afford to spend for Surtain could be the determining factor.
