Trevon Diggs has reportedly undergone successful ACL surgery, and there’s good news about his return date.

The Cowboys were dealt a bitter blow earlier this season when star cornerback Trevon Diggs tore his ACL.

Diggs tore his ACL during practice after Dallas’ 30-10 win over the New York Jets in Week 2. It was a huge loss for a Cowboys defense that won its first two games by a combined score of 70-10. Diggs was a major factor in those wins, registering four tackles, three passes defended, one interception and one forced fumble.

Trevon Diggs undergoes successful ACL surgery; poised to return for 2024 season

Many feared the worst after news of Diggs’ injury broke.

Thankfully, the news is positive, as according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the cornerback underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL on Tuesday.

Crucially, doctors found that all of Diggs’ other knee ligaments were intact, which means there should be no lasting issues. That paves the way for a successful return, with Diggs poised to come back for the 2024 season.

Cowboys defense has held up in his absence

Still, it will be a lengthy rehabbing process for Diggs, who tbroke out during the 2021 season when he led the league with 11 interceptions – the most in a single NFL season since 1981 and Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls.

Diggs was named both a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro that season. He made the Pro Bowl for a second time in 2022, when he registered a career-high 59 combined tackles, while adding another 3 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery as the Cowboys finished 12–5.

In his absence, the 4-2 Cowboys are relying on the cornerback duo of veteran Stephon Gilmore and second-year player DaRon Bland to man the boundaries.

While the team is obviously poorer off without Diggs, the defense has still held up well without him. The Cowboys D is 4th in points against per game (16.7), 5th in total yards against per game (288.67), 3rd in passing yards against per game (177), and 3rd in interceptions (8).
