Former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher has been released by the Los Angeles Rams just days before the Cowboys vs Rams game at AT&T Stadium.
The Cowboys return to action this weekend as they welcome the Los Angeles Rams to Arlington, Texas. Dallas are 4-2 for the season having overcome LA’s other team, the Chargers, with a 20-17 victory in the Week 6 Monday Night Football game.
Sunday’s game against the Rams was set to mark the return of one former Cowboys kicker. However, his revenge game has been stopped in its tracks after being released this week.

Rams release kicker Brett Maher
On Tuesday, the Rams announced they were releasing kicker Brett Maher. Maher’s release comes after he missed two field goals and an extra point in Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The 33-year-old is one of the NFL leaders in field goals made through Week 7, having made 17 of 23 field goal attempts and 12 of 13 PATs in 2023. However, those six missed field goals have proved costly and his conversion percentage has dropped to 73.9%, which ranks 29th out of 33 kickers this season.
Maher has been kicking since 2013, and spent last year with the Cowboys. Unfortunately for him, it means he won’t get to return to his former team this weekend.
Los Angeles will replace Maher with Lucas Havrisik, who could make his NFL debut against the Cowboys.

Cowboys have not exactly missed him
Maher spent three of his previous four seasons with the Cowboys, hitting 78 of 98 FG tries (79.6%) between 2018-2022. His late season struggles ultimately cost him his job in Dallas though as he missed an NFL-record four extra-point tries in last season’s wild-card round.
The Cowboys haven’t exactly missed him this season either. His replacement, Brandon Aubrey, has made 16th successful field goals from 16 attempts this season, and is two shy of equalling the NFL record for consecutive makes (18) to start a career. The only blemish on his record so far is a missed extra-point in Week 1.
The former MLS soccer player made a crucial 39-yarder down the stretch against the Chargers last time out to give the Cowboys a 20-17 lead.
Aubrey is in his rookie season in the NFL having previously played in the USFL for the Birmingham Stallions. He was invited to the Cowboys training camp this offseason, and after competing with Tristan Vizcaino, became the team’s next kicker.
