Teams must reach out to Jerry Jones first to make a trade

Anyone wanting to make a deal with the Dallas Cowboys must make the first move.

That’s the message from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as we inch closer to the NFL trade deadline on October 31st.

By all accounts, Jones and the Cowboys were expected to be buyers heading into the trade deadline, with numerous names being linked to this team.

Trade talk

Some of the players reportedly on the trading block include Derrick Henry, Cedrick Wilson, Zach Ertz and Patrick Surtain.

Should a trade for either of those players materialize, the Cowboys would have to sacrifice either money, future draft picks, some current players or a little bit of each in all likelihood.

These recent remarks by Jones during his weekly interview with “Shan and RJ” on 105.3 The Fan suggests the Cowboys owner is content to move forward with the current roster as it stands.

When discussing a potential trade on that show, Jones said: “It will have to come our way. I don’t want to preclude it in any way, but it always does. … The initiation of an opportunity to make a trade that would help us principally has to start over on the other end. That’s not showing a lack of aggressiveness, it’s just how it starts.”

He added: “I like where we are with our personnel today. I’m not thinking in any way that we need to upgrade our roster.” That being said, Jones added that, “I would really extend to improve our team right now. … Because I think we have a team that is a contender. So, I would do it right now.”

Dallas are currently second in the NFC East with a record of 4-2 as they get set to face the Los Angeles Rams at AT&T Stadium on Sunday.

If the Cowboys are to make a move between now and Halloween, it appears it’d be on the offensive side, as they are currently in the middle of the pack regarding offensive yards per game (329.8).

There has been a lot of talk recently about the Cowboys getting help in the running game, an area they have struggled with to this point of the 2023 campaign.

Six games into the regular season, Tony Pollard has had difficulty getting much going on the ground in his first year as the full-time starter, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

Defensively, Dallas ranks fifth in the NFL for yards allowed per game (288.7), while they are tied for second in turnover differential (+6).

If Jones were to add some new faces to the defense, it’s likely a rental situation, perhaps to replace the injured Leighton Vander Esch or Trevon Diggs in the short term.

As things stand right now, the Cowboys do not appear to be in a hurry to get anything done.

Four of Dallas’ next six games will be at home, and Sunday will be the last chance for Jones to assess his team in game action before the trade deadline.
