After a productive first day in the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have suffered a huge blow to their predicted plans.

America’s Team selected offensive tackle Tyler Guyton with their first pick and acquired an extra pick for Day 2.

Excitement was rife across the draft room and there was hope that the Cowboys would select Jonathon Brooks.

Jerry Jones loved the prospect of Brooks after their player interview

Mike Fisher reported the Cowboys were ‘zeroed in on’ on the local rusher out of Texas University.

Brooks was labeled the best running back in his class and Dallas were hopeful to land their man in round two.

After suffering a brutal ACL tear in 2023, the 20-year-old’s draft stock plummeted.

Yet, his talent was evident and he would not fall to the Dallas Cowboys at pick #56.

Unfortunately, Brooks was snatched up by the Carolina Panthers with the 46th overall pick.

Moreover, Jerry Jones held Brooks in the highest regard and described their player interview as the best he had seen in 30 years.

Dallas lose their starting rusher Tony Pollard to free agency

After Tony Pollard left the Cowboys in free agency for the Tennessee Titans, the Cowboys had to secure a starting running back.

Dallas decided not to pursue veteran free agents in March because of the price and prepared to land a cheaper rookie alternative.

Recent conversations have taken place with Ezekiel Elliott and his agent.

Despite the talks being unrelated to a move, reliable reporters believe the front office is keen to pair their former All-Pro with a rookie.

Cowboys start talks with Elliott but will not serve as mentor to Johnathon Brooks

Elliott could mentor their rookie while also complementing their running game in short-yardage situations.

However, their draft plan has been thrown into disarray with the Panthers taking their preferred choice.

Per ESPN, Braelon Allen remains on the board and could be an impressive asset for the Cowboys run game.

Brooks and Dallas seemed a match made in heaven but he landed in Carolina being the first running back taken in the NFL Draft.
