During the 2024 Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a surprise move by selecting wide receiver Xavier Worthy, from Texas Tech, as their first choice. The franchise, initially slated for the 32nd spot, traded up with the Buffalo Bills, securing the 28th spot in the event.

Before the pick was announced, there was speculation that the Chiefs would bolster their offensive line, especially after the addition of Hollywood Brown.

However, the selection of Worthy demonstrated a change of plans, showing the team’s confidence in the player’s ability to strengthen the wide receiver unit.

Worthy, even before he knew he would be KC’s new rookie, already had a feeling he would be part of the team a few months before the draft. His intuition about his destiny seems to have been confirmed, as he was welcomed with open arms by the squad.

Xavier Worthy’s special sense of touch

Apparently, the wide receiver had an interview with Kansas City’s organisation right after the NFL Combine – and it must have been really important for him, like a gut feeling. Deep down, he knew that he would be picked.

Worthy has never hidden his desire of being a Chief. He thinks that his skillset matches the way the franchise has utilized Tyreek Hill in the past.

Once he’d received the golden phone call, the Texas Tech prospect spoke again about his sure hunch: “I’ve been saying it since the beginning of the year, ‘I’m going to the Chiefs.’ Everybody thought the NFL was never going to let the Chiefs get to me, but I’m here. I’m excited, man, just to be able to play with Pat (Mahomes). Seeing the success Tyreek Hill had in this offense, I feel like it will be amazing.”

The rookie can’t wait to play next to Pat Mahomes

It’s hard for a 20-year-old to process that he’s on the same team as Patrick Mahomes. Despite his young age, Worthy’s mentality is in line with what the Chiefs will be looking for this season.

“Everybody dreams of playing with Patrick Mahomes, one of the greatest QBs of all-time. To be able to play for him, everybody talks about it, but I’ve been saying for a while that I’m going to be a Chief. Now that I’m here it’s amazing.” he said to KCTV5 News.

The freshman added: “I feel like I’m a complete receiver. I can run the whole route tree, disciplined, smart, know the game very well, so I feel like I’m bringing a complete receiver to Kansas City.”

For a team that until February suffered at the wide receiver position, the new pieces bring great expectations for 2024. Brett Veach continues to establish himself as one of the best general managers in the NFL.
