The Chiefs are not wasting any time regrouping and adding depth to their roster as they prepare for their title defense in the 2024 season.

Yesterday it was announced that the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a deal with Irv Smith Jr. on a one-year contract.

Smith is being brought in to provide depth in the tight end position.

He was a second-round pick in 2019 for the Minnesota Vikings and has been plagued by injuries since.

In 12 games for the Cincinnati Bengals last season, he caught 18 passes for 115 yards including a touchdown.

Moreover, the 25-year-old has caught 109 total passes for 973 career receiving yards.

After coming off his career-high season – hauling in 365 yards – he tore his meniscus and required surgery.

One season with the Bengals was the next chapter in his career but joined free agency in the current offseason.

A new chapter for Irv Smith in Kansas

Now, Irv Smith Jr. will be lacing up his cleats for the Chiefs and supporting Travis Kelce.

Age is catching up on Kelce and coming off his worst statistical career since 2015, you can see why the franchise wants backup.

Furthermore, the Chiefs need to be as prepared as ever if they are going to complete the historical ‘three-peat’.

Bringing in Smith is one step to achieving that goal.

The move was fate

However, was the tight end always destined to link up with the Chiefs at some point?

The rookie out of Alabama was quizzed about a possible link up with the Chiefs, back at the NFL Combine in 2019.

He responded: “With Travis Kelce and the great offense that they have, you can never go wrong with more weapons, so it would be cool.”

Smith hinted at the thinking behind the Chiefs’ recent recruitment of him back in 2019. He was eventually drafted by the Minnesota Vikings instead, and spent a year in Cincinnati last season.

Now, he finally moves to Kansas City. Chiefs Kingdom does need more weapons, they now have a supporting tight-end.

Now the focus turns to their wide receiver core which needs filling.
