The Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones contract standoff opened a new chapter, with reports emerging a new deal may not be on the table.
There is a reported ‘mutual’ understanding between the two parties and the quarterback could test free agency in 2025.
Prescott’s underwhelming postseason
The lack of playoff success has forced Jones to show his intention and a new deal may not be on the way.
America’s Team has won 12 games in the regular season for the past three years.
However, they cannot seem to break the playoff curse and are nearly 30 years without a Super Bowl appearance.
Additionally, the 30-year-old signal caller boasts a grim 2-5 playoff record in eight seasons.

He enters the last year of his deal and could be made to play with an uncertain future.
Jones’ way of thinking has received a vast volume of backlash recently.
Andre Hawkins said the owner was ‘playing with fire’ and was stuck in the ‘old ways’ of negotiation.
At the latest NFL owners meeting, Jones said Prescott could win a Super Bowl.
Amid all the backlash, some industry leaders have agreed that Prescott needs to prove it in the postseason.
Former running back LeSean McCoy was full of praise for the idea of making Prescott play out his deal.
‘You prove it’
On the TV show Speak, he rejoiced: “Yes, what are we talking about here?
“The last two years, he’s had top five, top three roster, what else do you (Prescott) need and he can’t get over the hump? If we are talking about the regular season, sure, sign him up, give him 200, 300, 400 million dollars for the regular season.
“The postseason where it matters the most… he can’t give you that. Jerry Jones finally came to light and said it: ‘Yes we love Dak Prescott… but we can’t win a big game with him. So, either you prove it you can win a big game and I’m a prove it and pay you off’.”
McCoy has embraced the idea of Prescott having to ‘prove it’ if he wants the big money.
Prescott needs a ring for an extension
Undoubtedly, if the quarterback can deliver a Super Bowl appearance or a ring, he will be offered an extension.
The owner’s patience has worn thin and is giving him one last chance otherwise they close the door.
On the other hand, the window is still open for Jones to provide an extension this offseason.
However, sorting the new contract out before free agency would have made sense.
They could have restructured the deal to open cap space for roster additions.
Only Jerry Jones knows what his plan for Dak is, Cowboys fans just pray it is the right one.
