Jerry Jones has seemingly chosen to steer clear of a Dak Prescott extension and is making the latter play out his final year.

Prescott’s looming contract extension has taken another turn and now reports suggest there will not be one.

Therefore, the 30-year-old will cost America’s Team $55 million on the cap.

Initially, the quarterback was going to cost $59 million but they reworked his deal.

Jones will let Prescott play out his deal

Jerry Jones seems content with Prescott eating up all the cap space and letting him have an uncertain future.

The lack of playoff success has been the catalyst in this decision, Jones wants Prescott to prove he can win a Super Bowl.

Now, the franchise quarterback is looking at the real possibility of being a free agent next year.

The Cowboys have next to no say as to what Dak does in 2025.

He cannot be franchised tagged; all they could do is offer him a new deal.

However, there will be no proposal unless he reaches a Super Bowl.

As we know, Jerry Jones is a very stubborn character and will not entertain the idea of Prescott holding all the leverage.

In an attempt to regain control, the owner has resorted to suggesting Prescott needs to prove it.

‘Playing with fire’

Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, Andre Hawkins, spoke on ESPN about the recent revelation.

The former NFL star slammed Jones’ tactics: “Jerry Jones you are playing with fire brother.

“I think he is under the assumption that we are still in the old ways of negotiation, where it is winner takes all, that’s the only way to win a deal.

“That is not good business and that will not work in this scenario. He doesn’t have any leverage against Dak Prescott and the longer this drags on, the more Dak Prescott is likely to say ‘Well let me go see what the market says’.”

Jones has no power in the negotiation

Jones refuses to accept Prescott has the upper hand in this situation but he is pushing Prescott towards the open market.

This mentality could be destroying any new chance of a deal come 2025.

Ultimately, Prescott will know he could land one of the biggest contracts ever seen in NFL history in free agency.

Dallas could be forced into a challenging rebuild of the most vital position soon.

Additionally, with Mike McCarthy with one year left and Mike Zimmer on a one-year deal, the rebuild could extend to the coaching staff as well.

Jones has found no solutions this offseason and is mounting up the problems instead.
