The negotiation window is – unofficially – open, insanely bustling and Dallas continues with quiet, unexpressive moves.
The Dallas Cowboys were the only franchise not to make a deal with one of their own or another team’s free agents during the first day of the NFL negotiating period.
After three consecutive seasons with 12 wins without at least reaching the NFC title game, Dallas Cowboys general manager and owner Jerry Jones believes that 2024 will be the team’s year.
“We will be going all-in. We’ve seen some things out of some of the players that we want to be all-in on. Yes, I would say that you will see us this coming year not build for the future”, Jones said at this year’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
Cowboys agree first deal
On Tuesday morning, ESPN Senior reporter Jeremy Fowler announced that Dallas had re-signed long-snapper Trent Sieg.
NFC teams are making big moves and it looks like the Cowboys will be restrained and don’t want to take any risks. They will probably extend the contracts of Micah Parsons and Cee Dee Lamb.
They have unfortunately missed out on a succession of free agents, including Derrick Henry.
There’s also the question of Dak Prescott. It seems that the team will sign him to a long-term contract, eventually – but it is unclear when.
A deal would free up a lot of salary cap space for GM Jones to put his all-in plan into practice. Dallas needs to bolster its roster, which is struggling at running back, left tackle and defensive line.

Although it seems strange, the free-agency window doesn’t officially open until Wednesday, so the tendency is for things to intensify.
ESPN’s Get Up TV show discussed the franchise’s quietness during the start of the negotiating period. NFL insider Dan Graziano has complained that Prescott’s situation hasn’t been solved because neither he nor the organization take responsibility for it and pointed out that this affects the whole team.
“If the Cowboys could press a button and extend Dak Prescott they would do it.
“It takes two to tango and Dak Prescott has to want to do the deal too. To entirely blame the team on this… I’m not defending them at all, but the fact of the matter is Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are equally to blame for the lack of extension.”
The reporter also brought up Dallas’ tradition of making internal moves and not opting to sign players from other teams.
“I hate to sit here and say ‘i told you so’. They (the Cowboys) believe that the right way to build their roster is Draft develop and retain their own guys.”
Dallas draft picks
There’s not much time left until the Draft and the team has a few picks to make.
1st round: No. 24
2nd round: No. 56
3rd round: No. 87
5th round: No. 173 (compensatory)
6th round: No. 216 (compensatory)
7th round: No. 233 (via Raiders)
7th round: No. 244
Dallas needs to do something in the next few days. Anything at all. Before the lack of moves corroborates the much-talked-about curse that hangs over the franchise.
