‘I reached out’… Jane Slater gives Dak Prescott contract update, predicts when Cowboys deal might be done

Not a passing day goes by in the NFL offseason for the Dallas Cowboys where they are not reminded of Dak Prescott’s alarming situation at present.

America’s Team’s front office is faced with a tricky situation to navigate but might be casting the problem aside for now.

After another brutal exit from the playoffs, fans have been suggesting that the Cowboys move past Prescott and rebuild.

The precious cap hit

The 20-year-old still has 1-year remaining on his current deal and will be swallowing a monstrous $59 million in cap space.

If a deal was to be agreed, sooner rather than later was the logical thinking.

If Prescott is destined for a new deal, the contract would have to be reconstructed to lower the cap hit on the 2024 season.

Jacksonville Jaguars v Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys after this negotiation would then categorically know how much money they have to deal with during free agency.

Nonetheless, according to Jane Slater of the NFL Network, ‘there have been no talks as of yet.’

Which may set a dangerous precedent in the future.

Jerry Jones is the face of the franchise, the brand of the Dallas Cowboys, however, in this negotiation he is no longer the star of the show.

Prescott vs Jones

Prescott holds all the leverage with the cap hit imminent and the no trade or franchise tag clause in his current deal.

The three-time Pro Bowler would be leaving for nothing this time next year if no new contract materializes.

The 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, will be a starter for 75% of all NFL teams if he hits the free agency market right now.

Jones now faces a predicament but seems to be kicking the can down the road.

Slater gives her insight into the proceedings so far: “I reached out to Dak’s agent Todd Francis and unsurprisingly didn’t get a response back.

“I don’t believe this to be a cause for alarm based on how the last contract went… but ultimately this deal will most likely get done but don’t be surprised if that materializes closer to August.

“You would think they would get this deal done sooner so they know how much money they have to go shopping with in free agency and the draft but that is just not the Cowboys way.”

Dak Prescott is Cowboys best chance

Prescott is coming off an outstanding production season in terms of numbers.

At this moment in time, Jones will be delaying the inevitable maybe to show that their franchise quarterback does not hold the upper hand.

Mike McCarthy will also want the quarterback who has been amazing in the regular season, as he knows they have the best shot at a Super Bowl with Prescott calling the snaps.
