Trey Lance’s future in Dallas could be in doubt after news emerged about the Cowboys’ draft options.

The quarterback is set to battle it out in training camp against Cooper Rush for the job of backing up Dak Prescott.

Rush was declared the backup to Prescott in 2023 and hopes to secure that role again with one year left on his deal.

Moreover, Trey Lance will look to become the second-string starter to slightly rejuvenate his NFL career.

A season-ending injury and the emergence of Brock Purdy in 2022, saw his time in San Francisco end.

The future for the young signal caller looks very bleak.

He is about to enter his fourth season in the NFL with just four starts and 797 passing yards to his name.

Now, it could become even more unprecedented with the latest Cowboys development.

Cowboys described as a ‘sleeper team’ to draft a QB

NFL Insider Adam Schefter has described the Dallas Cowboys as a ‘sleeper team’ to draft a quarterback in 2024.

This is because Prescott is entering the final year of his current deal and could hit free agency in 2025.

Furthermore, Jerry Jones has implied he is willing to let the signal-caller play out his deal.

If the Cowboys do potentially search for life after Prescott in this draft, this is further bad news for Lance.

The Cowboys front office would prioritize a future franchise quarterback over the Minnesota native.

Ultimately, the reality could be Lance falls further down the QB pecking order.

Lance’s opportunities to be limited with another QB in the mix

The problems he faces, such as the lack of exposure in the NFL, and his serious injury, do not make him an attractive profile.

Therefore, another QB limiting any future opportunities will cast more doubt over his position.

The 23-year-old has one year remaining on his rookie deal and it would be reasonable to suggest there will be no fifth-year extension.

Trey Lance will become a free agent in 2025 with only 56 career passing attempts.
