Stephen A. Smith has changed his tune on the Chiefs in the space of a week

After ranking the Chiefs as the fourth best team in the league last week, Stephen A. Smith has finally come around and accepted that Kansas are the No.1 team in football right now.

The Chiefs have well and truly put the Week 1 loss to the Lions behind them, rattling off six wins in a row to move to 6-1 for the season.

Kansas now has the longest active winning streak in the league, giving them the joint best record in the NFL with the Eagles.

In the first few weeks of the season, KC were racking up wins despite not fully hitting their stride on offense. However, in the past few weeks, particularly in the Week 7 win over the Chargers, Patrick Mahomes has got the team right where it needs to be.

Last week Stephen A. Smith had the Chiefs down as the fourth best team in the league

Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception in the 31-17 win against the Chargers. Through seven games this season, the Chiefs QB has a 101.0 passer rating, and has totaled 2,017 yards (on a 69.5 completion percentage) for 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, are 2nd in total yards per game (403.9), 3rd in passing yards (292.6 PYPG) and 6th in points scored per game (25.4).

Just last week, First Take host Stephen A. Smith had the Chiefs as the fourth best team in the NFL. According to Smith, the Lions, 49ers and Dolphins were all above the Chiefs after six games:

He now has Kansas as the No.1 team in the NFL

However, a lot can change in the space of a week, and now Smith has the Chiefs as the best team in the NFL. That’s likely to do with those aforementioned teams losing in Week 7; the Lions were demolished by the Ravens, the 49ers dropped their second straight defeat at the hands of the Vikings, and the Dolphins were beaten by the Eagles.

Those results, combined with the Chiefs winning, have the reigning Super Bowl champions atop Stephen A.’s list. They’re followed by the Eagles, Ravens, 49ers and Jaguars:

Chiefs’ defense has been superb

While the offense has steadily got going, the Chiefs’ defense has been one of the best in the league for several weeks. Through seven games this season, they are the only team in the NFL to have held each of their opponents to 21 points or less in every game.

They rank 2nd in points against per game with 15.

The KC defense has has also allowed just 6.1 yards per pass attempt – the league’s third-lowest rate – and are seventh in total yards against per game with 294.57 and sixth in passing yards against per game with 188.86.

The Chiefs are virtually a complete football team right now which spells bad news for the AFC and rest of the NFL.
