Patrick Mahomes’ teachings have been put to good use during the offseason workouts.

Despite winning the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs players haven’t stopped practicing even during their break.

For a few weeks now, they’ve been training on their own before the official workouts actually begin. Patrick Mahomes has been hosting some of his team-mates at his home in Texas for the past three years.

The camp schedule for the quarterback camp is divided into three parts. First they start with a morning workout/physical therapy, then throwing + route running session (two to three times a week) and meet virtually with coaches at noon.

The purpose behind ‘Camp Mahomes’

More than the team’s QB, Patrick Mahomes is a leader on and off the field. At Monday’s press conference, the signal-caller spoke about the main reason why he’s doing these “unofficial” practices.

“I think just the guys hearing it from me because we get the workouts in before the meetings. Hearing how I explain things, how I explain the routes, what I’m kind of thinking, and then getting to go into the meeting room and hear the coaches and hear how they explain the stuff and we blend that together.

“So to be able to explain my thought process one-on-one, I think it gives guys a good intro into what the coaches are thinking and the coaches can really detail the details”, he added.

Mahomes appreciates what his teammates have to say: “I can hear what they’re thinking whenever they’re running their routes. It helps me know where they’re gonna be at and what their timing is gonna be, and that’s something that I try to do during the year, but there’s kind of a lot of things that you’re worried about during the season.

“When I can hear them and we talk it through and we hear from the coaches, we can all be on the same page.”

His thoughts on the players who attended the camp

Wide receivers Hollywood Brown, Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, Anthony Miller, running back Louis Rees-Zammit, tight end Noah Gray and quarterback Chris Oladokun joined the workouts.

“What stood out is how hard the guys want to work, that’s always great. I say it and people take it for granted. You have to get guys that want it, this is all season this time, you could be anywhere in the world, spend it on vacation and these guys have come in.

“I’m in my hometown in my house, so it’s easy for me to go work out and throw, but these guys are in hotel or in Air BNB and they’re down here getting worked in and they want to be great and that’s awesome.”

The defending champion quarterback is ‘pleasantly surprised’ by Hollywood Brown’s route running and has high expectations that the WR will bring more positive alternatives in the passing game.

“He wants more. He wants to continue to push himself more and more. I think he’ll have a great role in this offense, the way he’s able to run around, the way he’s able to stretch the field. I think he’ll be even different than you’ve seen him before because I think we can utilize him in different ways.”

Mahomes thinks connecting with the team is valuable

Above all, Mahomes takes advantage of these moments to create bonds with the players outside the facilities of Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think what I find most enjoyable is just building those relationships with the guys. I mean every single team’s different and just getting the guys, especially, getting them down here. Seeing them outside the building, trying to do different things, trying to get dinners whatever it is. You get to meet the guy and I think that’s what brings a team closer together and so that’s something that I enjoy especially about this part of the year.”

Being able to learn from and build a relationship with the genius Mahomes is an opportunity of a lifetime.
