Patrick Mahomes doesn’t think the Chiefs are ‘executing the little stuff at a high enough level’

Patrick Mahomes told reporters the Chiefs need to improve on executing the ‘little stuff’ to get to where they need to be.

Kansas City currently share the best record in the NFL at 5-1, and are comfortably 1st in the AFC West. The defending Super Bowl champions also have the longest active winning streak in the league (five straight) after the 49ers and Eagles dropped a surprise game in Week 6.

They’ve undoubtedly had a sluggish start to the season, though, particularly on offense, despite ranking ninth in points per game (24.5), fourth in yards per game (382.3) and fifth in total passing yards (1,624).

Patrick Mahomes doesn’t think the Chiefs are ‘executing the little stuff at a high enough level’

Speaking to media reporters this week, Patrick Mahomes said the Chiefs need to improve on executing the ‘little stuff’ to get to where they need to be.

“I said that after the game and even watching the film you see it even more,” Mahomes said in his press conference. “It’s just the little stuff that we’re not executing at a high enough level. It’s not everybody, and it’s different people every single play including myself.

“In this league, in order to have these sustained drives, and score touchdowns, get in the end zone and score against good defenses, you have to execute — everybody, coaches included, and I think that’s something that we have to continue to get better and better at. I think if we start executing at a high enough level, we have the talent, and we have the play calls so let’s just continue to get better and better.”

Mahomes has had a drop off this season

Mahomes has 153 pass completions on 224 attempts for a 68.3% completion rate, which if he keeps up, would be a career high. He has 1,593 passing yards and 185 rushing yards for 11 touchdowns. However, he has also thrown five interceptions at a passing interception rate of 2.2 – his highest since 2017.

His passer rating is also at 95.7, his worst since the 2017 season and a drop off from 105.2 from last season. He is down from 308.8 passing yards per game last season to 265.5 this season.

However, if anyone can get things back on track in the next few weeks it’s Mahomes.
