Mahomes and Kelce looking for first TD combination at home against the Chargers

Few fans in Kansas City would disagree that the duo of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce is one of the best this franchise has ever seen.

Together, the two of them have been simply magical, with Kelce catching 642 passes in his career with Mahomes for 7,919 yards and 66 touchdowns.

That’s throughout 97 games together; needless to say, they’ve formed a pretty solid partnership.

It’s no surprise that in five games together this season, Kelce has been the primary go-to guy for Mahomes, with the reigning league MVP targeting him 46 times.

Kelce has caught 36 passes from him in 2023 for 346 yards and three scores.

Interestingly, the two have had much more success against their Sunday opponents, the Los Angeles Chargers, on the road than at home.

The two Chiefs superstars have been difference makers at SoFi Stadium, with a total of six touchdowns together in their three visits there.

Kelce has made 25 catches in those three contests for 396 yards.

No luck so far

However, things have not been so easy for the dynamic duo when playing their AFC West rivals in Kansas City.

They have featured together in four home contests versus the Chargers, and although Kelce has led them in the receiving department on three of those occasions, he’s yet to find the end zone.

Over those four encounters, Kelce has caught 17 passes from Mahomes for 240 yards, decent numbers if you’re a Charger, given the kind of damage those two have done to the opposition at Arrowhead.

Meanwhile, in those four games versus Los Angeles, KC has won on two occasions, including last season by a score of 27-24.

Their last home defeat against the Chargers when Mahomes and Kelce were in the lineup was in September 2021 (30-24).

While the Chargers in the past have done a relatively good job at containing Mahomes and Kelce at Arrowhead, there’s good reason to believe that won’t happen this weekend.

Los Angeles has been dismal in pass coverage all season long, allowing an average of 289.0 yards per game through the air including eight scores.

They have improved in the department over the past two weeks, giving up just one passing TD against both the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.

The Chargers though also rank second from the bottom in the NFL regarding total yards allowed per game (391.6), with only the Broncos conceding more (440.3).

Those are the next two opponents for KC, so there’s a real opportunity for Mahomes and Kelce to do some damage in the coming weeks.

There are more encouraging stats coming into this weekend that suggest Mahomes and Kelce will finally connect for a TD at home against LA.

Mahomes has a touchdown pass in eight of his last nine Sunday games, with his best performance of the season in that department coming in their only Sunday home game this year, throwing for three scores against the Bears, one to Kelce.

As for Kelce, he has found the end zone in five of the last six Sunday fixtures with Kansas City.

Knowing how hungry those two are to break records and win, one has to think they’ll break that TD skid at Arrowhead against the Chargers sooner rather than later.
