NFL reporter believes one Chiefs star could blow the market ‘through the roof’ soon

The Kansas City Chiefs have been very active in their offseason activity so far but could make another bold move.

One of the biggest talking points before free agency was L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones’ expiring contracts.

Sneed gives cap space opening

The Chiefs decided to give Sneed the non-exclusive franchise tag and trade him to the Tennessee Titans.

Meanwhile, Jones all but confirmed his legacy with start and finish in Kansas City.

The defensive tackle signed a five-year deal worth up to $158 million.

Sneed’s trade was due to the consideration of saving cap space for future dealings.

One of the Chiefs’ offensive stars could make use of that cap opening during the offseason.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are the headline-stealing offensive players for the Chiefs.

However, one of the unsung heroes is center Creed Humphrey.

Humphrey one year left on current deal

The 24-year-old has been one of the key foundations of the offensive line since his draft in 2021.

After completing three seasons, he has earned two Super Bowl rings, two Pro Bowl appearances, and All-Pro status in 2022.

Therefore, this means he is entering the last season of his initial rookie contract out of Oklahoma.

Humphrey will test free agency next year if no new deal is agreed.

‘Close to $17 million’

However, NFL journalist Ari Meirov has tipped the center to receive a market-setting new deal.

On the 33rdTeam podcast, Meirov: “They (Chiefs) have more guys to pay and it starts at the center with Creed Humphrey.

“Finished just his third year in the NFL, entering the final year of his contract. This is a player who has started every single game in his career, 17 regular season games every single season.

“The highest paid center is Frank Ragnow in Detroit at $13.5 million per year, would not surprise me if Creed Humphrey is trying to get anywhere close to $17 million per year and blow the center market through the roof.”

Chiefs could reset the center market

From the report, the Oklahoma native could be asking for $3.5 million more than the current market.

His skill level and health record make him an invaluable asset for the Chiefs.

Ultimately, the Chiefs will not be looking to flirt close to the free agency market.

Humphrey looks well placed to receive a lucrative extension that will keep him in Missouri.

People asked why the Chiefs traded away Sneed, so they could pay other talents on the roster when necessary.
