Next step for Cowboys and Dak Prescott negotiations as ‘deadline’ set to push situation forward

Conclusively the biggest talking point in the Cowboys offseason is the contract situation surrounding franchise quarterback Dak Prescott.

The signal caller produced his most productive season to date in the NFL in terms of numbers.

In 2023, Prescott led the National Football League in completions (410) and total touchdowns (36).

Cowboys options for Dak Prescott

After finishing runner up to the Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson in the regular MVP season race, the Cowboys 2016 NFL Draft pick is now eyeing up a new contract.

With just one year left on his current deal, Americas Team now faces the costly decision of how to approach the situation.

Do they give Prescott a bumper new deal which could send seismic waves through the quarterback market?

Or could they let Prescott play out the rest of his contract and run the risk of losing him for free next year.

However, Mike Fisher, a Cowboys reporter, believes they will and should pursue a third option: “Option number three, the one that I am saying is buzzy in the building.

“Move the money [$59.4 million] out into the two voidable years that is built into his contract.

“By the way you don’t have to ask Dak Prescott’s permission to do that, you don’t have to negotiate that, you just do it.”

According to Fisher, the Dallas Cowboys have to be cap compliant by the 13th of March.

Therefore, the saga surrounding Prescott’s lucrative contract will have to have reached its conclusion by this date.

Conversations to begin soon

Negotiations are on a tight deadline, so do not be surprised to hear any movement by either side in the coming days.

Only three years ago the Louisiana native became the highest paid quarterback on a four-year contract, with a guaranteed salary of $126 million – which could rise to $160 million.

Todd France, Prescott’s agent, and Stephen Jones, Cowboys CEO, will be at the NFL Combine to discuss the matter and set the wheel in motion.

Which is “standard practice” for all franchises when discussing the smallest and biggest contracts.

Nevertheless, what we do know is that by March the 13th the situation should be resolved and the Dallas executives’ stance will be made clear.

Just because there have been little developments in the matter so far, doesn’t mean there won’t be, because it will have to be all made clear in a fortnight’s time.
