Jeremy Fowler reveals what he has heard about Dak Prescott’s Dallas Cowboys contract situation

The Dallas Cowboys need to get a new contract tied up for Dak Prescott, but news may not be imminent.

There is a lot the Dallas Cowboys want to achieve this off-season, with owner Jerry Jones looking to go ‘all in’.

This is easier said than done, with the Cowboys deferring a long-term decision on quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract in recent seasons, and now needing to find a solution.

Until the numbers are crunched on a new deal for Prescott, other business will be difficult to agree, with CeeDee Lamb also one year away from hitting free agency, and free agent acquisitions to target.

Dak Prescott latest

Quarterback contracts rarely get agreed quickly, and it appears there is no imminent resolution on the cards for Dallas.

Speaking to ESPN, NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler provided an update on where the situation currently stands.

He told the channel: “I was told that Dallas and Dak Prescott’s reps have not had any substantial talks.

“They have not discussed numbers. They could still meet at the NFL Combine next week to at least get started to see where each side is at.

“He’s got a lot of leverage. They have got to try and sign Prescott and CeeDee Lamb over the next few months. It is going to be complicated, I don’t know how they pull it off.”

Salary cap increase will help Dallas

Working in the Dallas Cowboys’ favour is a higher than expected NFL salary cap.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport posted on X: “The NFL announced that the 2024 Salary Cap will be $255.4M per club, with an additional $74M per club payment for player benefits, which includes Performance Based Pay and benefits for retired players.

“Total 2024 player costs will be $329.4M per club, or more than $10.5B league-wide.

“The unprecedented $30M increase per club in this year’s Salary Cap is the result of the full repayment of all amounts advanced by the clubs and deferred by the players during the Covid pandemic as well as an extraordinary increase in media revenue for the 2024 season.”

Dallas were projected to be over the previous cap, and these loosened salary restrictions will help Jerry Jones to balance the books, and get the deals done which he needs to.

So this ‘could’ get moving at the NFL Combine this week, which coach Mike McCarthy has decided he won’t be attending. But don’t bet on an imminent resolution.
