When Dak Prescott’s contract with Dallas Cowboys ends

The franchise quarterback is a hot topic this off season with the players contract entering the fourth and final year.

Despite a promising season, the Dallas Cowboys were left in a state of misery once again in the playoffs. An awful defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers just about summed up the Cowboys recent playoff history. Dak Prescott managed to make the scoreline slightly more respectable in garbage time, but the writing was on the wall long before.

When Dak Prescott’s contract expires

Entering the final year of his current deal, Dak Prescott’s current contract is due to expire in 2025.

Now Jerry Jones and the franchise find themselves at a financial crossroads with the eighth-year quarterback. All parties urgently need to put their heads together to find a solution; with the conclusion leaning towards a Prescott fifth-year extension.

It is a problem which has been described as one of the Cowboys’ own making.

The key dilemma for the Cowboys – is according to NFL media reports the franchise will exceed the cap space limit by granting Prescott an extension.

Dallas Cowboys cap space problems

The numbers have been crunched and with the NFL reported to set the 2024 cap space threshold at $242.5 million, the Cowboys will be spending $21.295 million over the limit.

However, if an extension is agreed between all parties, the 30-year-old’s contract can be carefully restructured to aid the Cowboys’ troubles with the cap space. He is currently among the top 10 most highly paid quarterbacks in the NFL. The challenge is to do this before Free Agency. Contract negotiations with quarterbacks often take months.

Prescott is not the only contract on the agenda for the Dallas Cowboys office, talks with star players CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons will also be on the negotiating table for Jerry Jones, also the General Manager.

Extending Dak Prescott is important in the short-term

Prescott would certainly argue his case for a favourable extension after producing numbers which earned him a runner-up spot in the MVP race, finishing behind Lamar Jackson who nearly won unanimously.

Although, the Texas based franchise will argue that his playoff woes deem him not worthy of a lucrative extension.

Sporting a less than impressive 2-5 postseason record, Prescott will struggle to argue his case in negotiations. Keeping him in the short-term is the right play, but long-term, is he the answer?

With Cooper Rush and Trey Lance waiting in the wings and some Cowboy fans losing faith in Prescott, despite not being as financially viable, people question is it time to move on?
