The Kansas City Chiefs have finally answered the question, of who will back up Patrick Mahomes in 2024.

Kansas City has acquired the free-agent services of Carson Wentz who plays a supporting role to Mahomes.

The two-time MVP has not had an established backup that the fans could feel confident in if he were to be injured.

Chiefs sign former world champion Carson Wentz

Now, Chiefs Kingdom will cheer on a former Super Bowl winner Carson Wentz.

Furthermore, Wentz said he had always admired the culture the Chiefs possess and is excited for the season.

The 31-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs from free agency.

Los Angeles Rams v New York Giants

According to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, Wentz’s contract is worth up to $3.325 million with $2.2 million guaranteed.

The Chiefs backup quarterback will be pondering the memories of the time when he signed a deal earning 10 times more.

Wentz earns mega-deal in Philadelphia

As the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, Wentz signed a four-deal in 2019 after his fifth-year rookie extension was activated.

Wentz penned a lucrative $128 million four-season deal with $107 fully guaranteed.

Only five years after Wentz was contracted to this outlandish figure, now his new deal is just a drop in the ocean in comparison.

After the extension in Philadelphia, Wentz’s production crumbled and he fell out of favor with the staff.

Moreover, the Eagles opted to start exciting talent Jalen Hurts instead.

Hurts’ talent sealed Wentz’s fate and he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021.

Patrick Mahomes went on to beat Wentz’s successor at Super Bowl LVII – one of the greatest finals of all time.

The new Chiefs backup QB is set to earn just 10% of what he was contracted to receive five years ago.

Wentz earns more than the previous backup Blaine Gabbert

However, all is not doom and gloom, Wentz earns more than the previous Chiefs second-string signal caller Blaine Gabbert.

Gabbert was contracted to a one-year deal worth up to $1.317 million.

Therefore, Wentz is set to earn considerably more than his predecessor.

Finally, the Chiefs can have some peace of mind knowing that they have experience in big games waiting in the wings if needed.
