Kansas City strengthens reserve quarterback group with veteran and experienced NFL player.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a surprising move. Patrick Mahomes now has a new backup.

According to insider Jordan Schultz, Carson Wentz has signed a one-year contract with the franchise. He will be replacing Blaine Gabbert as the Chiefs’ No. 2 QB and also will join fellow reserves Ian Book and Chris Oladokun.

In 2023, Wentz was with the Los Angeles Rams to be Matthew Stafford’s backup. He played in two games, one of them as a starter.

The signal-caller was the Philadelphia Eagles’ second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Throughout his career, he has been a starter in 93 games, with a 47-45-1 record, but has spent most of the last two seasons as a reserve QB for the Commanders and the Rams.

His most recent game as a starter was in in last year’s Week 18, against the San Francisco 49ers: he scored two touchdowns, one of which he ran in himself, also threw an interception and led the Rams to a win.

Wentz is a 2017 Pro Bowler; he won the award that year with the Eagles when Andy Reid’s former assistant Doug Pederson was Philadelphia’s head coach.

Over five years, he has played for four teams – the Chiefs will be his fifth.

What can Carson Wentz add in KC

At the age of 31, it doesn’t look like Wentz will be a starting quarterback on any team. Still, he’s a reliable player who could work well if something goes wrong with Mahomes.

There’s no question of competition for the starting role. Patrick Mahomes is the most dominant starter in the entire NFL and should continue to be for several more years.

One piece of information that is worth remembering: since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2018, he has missed just four games as a starter.

The addition of Wentz to the Kansas City offense, even as a backup, brings an air of experience to the less developed QBs and could perhaps be a good scramble option for Andy Reid.
