Andy Reid and the Chiefs have been dealt another offseason controversy as they prepare for the 2024 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their first round of OTAs in May but have had to answer questions about Harrison Butker’s controversial comments.
Last week, Butker took to the stage at Benedictine College and delivered a message at the graduation ceremony.
His words, which were focused on the role of women, have sparked controversy across the NFL and social media.
Chiefs key figures were asked to share their opinion on Butker’s speech
Moreover, the kicker was present at the Chiefs’ OTA practice and many key figures were questioned in front of the media.
Patrick Mahomes was quick to say he did not agree with what his teammate said but would judge him by his character. The two-star players have shared a field together for seven years and have great insight into each others’ character.

Head coach Andy Reid was also asked to share his thoughts about his player’s recent remarks. The highest-paid coach in NFL history believes that it is the ‘great thing about America’ to share varying opinions.
Harrison Butker’s speech causes members of the public to sign a petition
Butker’s comments have seen people detest him and also support him. Furthermore, a petition, that gained 130,000 signatures in just a matter of days, was started to encourage the Chiefs to cut the kicker.
During Reid’s media time, a reporter asked what his thoughts were if women in the Chiefs building were concerned about the comments.
The three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach quickly dismissed the idea saying ‘it hasn’t happened yet’. In addition, he followed up the comments with a jokey dig at the reporters which mustered a few laughs.
Mike Florio believes Reid’s answer is an attempt to ‘close the door’ on the matter
However, Mike Florio has pointed out the dismissive attitude when responding to the question.
“Well, maybe coach (Reid) it hasn’t happened yet because maybe they kinda know it’s gonna fall on deaf ears if they come to you,” the NFL expert pointed out on Pro Football Talk.
“Through those comments, I got the impression that he wants to close the door on this and move on.
“The people who are concerned about it who work for the Chiefs, man or woman, they need to be able to raise it with someone and have their opinions heard. What I heard yesterday was let’s just move on.”
Florio highlights people could have been affected by his comments and need to be able to raise concerns with the franchise.
The Chiefs are already dealing with the incident involving Rashee Rice
The recent controversy comes at a delicate time when the franchise is already looking over its shoulder.
Senior figures like Brett Veach and Andy Reid are waiting for the outcome of Rashee Rice’s legal situation, concerning the street racing incident.
Ultimately, Butker is protected by his First Amendment right but his views could be harmful to female colleagues in the Chiefs building.
